Hello,

What's the best route to take when refilling rear end/tranny gear lube on a SM. 90 weight or a generic equivalent to Hytran?

Thanks,

Mark

in the m's and super m's i use 140 wieght gear oil. less leakage and remember all those gears and bearings have a little wear on them after sixty years of use, so a little extra clearance. if you used the tractor in below zero weather it wouold shift hard with the heavy gear oil.

90W, HyTran offers no benefit at all.

Case/IH now recomends Akcela Gear 135 HP 80W-90 in gear boxes of many of the late model tractors where lube does not serve dual purpose as hydraulic oil.

You'll hear pro's and con's either way, I personally run hy-tran in my M and SM, better lubrication in the colder months. New seals are a plus to keep it in and you might hear more gear noise, thats the only drawback. It won't hurt a thing, some people say it will, but then some will tell you to use 30w non-detergent oil in the engine because thats what the 1940's manual said.

80W90 is good if you are in a mid to southern state I would use 90-120wt gear lube. Pouring Hytran in it is not good due to seal issues, and more noise potential. JimN

A SM has no need of hytran. Though it would not harm anything, it is not a part of the hydraulic system. The cushoning effect of Gear Oil, and its ability to slow down the gears when shifting, are distinct advantages to gear oil (especially multi wt. Go with the thick stuff. JimN

So hytran has no benefit over good ol' fashioned 90 wt. gear oil?

Thanks,

Mark
