Super M or M? Help please

Let me first say that I know very little about tractors but I have restored a few old jeeps and know my way around a wrench.

I recently inherited a farmall M from my grandpa. The history is foggy but it appears he bought it in the mid 70s at an auction. He did nothing but drive it since then. It has live hydros via a pump mounted between the distributer and the timing cover. It also has a cable actuated pull knob that puts it in low range (torque amplifier?) It does not appear that these were added later (I am not sure though) because of the nicely cast bracket that holds the knob and the hydro control. My "Farmall buddy" told me it was a '54 Super MTA but after running serial numbers it says it is a 1951. The plate reads

M 275906 X 1

There is 3 small punches by the "M" Does this mean that it was bored out?

Please help me figure out what this thing is so that I can find parts for the restoration.

Thanks

1951 M, not a Super M, definitely not a Super MTA, not even close. Hydraulics are aftermarket, M&W, nothing wrong with that. Cable may run to a 9 speed transmission, but it goes to high not low range as you say, so I am not sure what you have. The 9 speed uses the original gears, but adds 4 speeds between the factory 4th and 5th gear. It is not a TA. It is also aftermarket. M&W and Heisler did a good job with their products, to the point that they do look factory.

Thanks for the info...
That makes sense because when I pull the knob it doesn't see to go any faster in fifth but "knob out 1st" seems faster than "Knob in 4th" I will tell my "farmall buddy" that he doesn't know jack.
One last thing... what about the 3 punch marks by the "M"? Do you think that it has been overbored?

Given that the tractor has been heavily modified, I wouldn't doubt that it has the M&W overbore kit with their step-headed pistons. You'd need a bore scope, or you'd need to pull the head.

It is a "super" M, but it is not a Super M. :)

I don't know what the punch marks are for. Many M's have more cu in than factory, but I have not heard of the punch marks -- could be a dealer thing, I don't know. As I said the speeds are between 4th and 5th, meaning over 5.125 mph and below 16.375 mph. I have never seen one, so I don't know how they work.

My dad owned a 1949 MD and had a M&W 9 speed transmission, M&W hand clutch (live pto), and an M&W hydraulics installed. He had traded it in for a 400 before I was old enough to operate it. He described the 9 speed as increasing the every gear except 5th gear, hence what CNK was describing.
