I use a Mc Cormick w6 in tractor pulls . It is equiped with a swinging draw bar . By useing the swinging draw bar I find it is easier to turn and change direction when pulling the sled under load . I was told that it would be best to lock the drawbar in the centre as the swinging drawbar would cause a safty problem when pulling under load . Is that true or can I continue to use the swinging position of the drawbar.

Hi I have actually done very litle to the W6 . Cleaned it up , painted it , replaced some bearings in the transmission , instaled new tires front and rear , tuned up engine , replaced all oil , engine is still original . I go to about 10 pulls throughout central Alberta / Canada . Came in first at Calgary Stampede on july 8 2007 . Have gone to tractor pulls for the last 5 years

What was the safety problem that was suggested?

Hi I have no idea why there was a safty concern . The only thing I can think of is , that it would give me a slight advantage to turn the tractor under load to change direction to reduce wheel spinn out on one side . By turning the differential shifts the load to the other wheel and helps to continue movement for a few more feet before complete spinn out . Reducing engine speed is not an option on a 4 cylinder engine they stall out because the inertia of the lighter fly wheel will reduce engine speed to suddenly and the governor can not recover engine speed quickly . Other tractors with heavy fly wheels dont have that problem , they can throttle back without stalling and use the lower RPM to reduce wheel spinnout . The longer one can keep the wheels from spinning out , the further one will travel on the track .

That's what the swinging drawbar is made for- swinging while pulling under load, making it easier to steer. The only danger that I've seen from them is when you step on it to get up on the tractor and forget that it will swing!

I have no idea what the rules are for pulling though.
