My 460 has a 301 in it. It seems to run decent, but occasionally it throws fire back out of the carb. I just put new points in. They are gapped to 20. I can't seem to get this slight miss out of it. I used to be able to start it without using the choke period unless it was really cold outside. Now I have to use the choke even after it has been warmed up to operating temperature. Is it a spark issue? The governor I have on it only allows it to run 2000 rpm. What would the timing have to be set at 2000 vs 2640 at 22 degress btdc? I run 93 fuel in it. thanks

As for the timing here and ya say that your running a 301 Ok, now what dist. are ya running the one out of a 301 combine engine or are ya running the one out of the 460?? Next bring the RPM's up ya i know it will mess up your PTO speed but when running PTo just back off a bit . As for the advance curve with out putting the dist. on a strob I have know idea what curve it has . On the fuel issure open the main jet up to 4 and a half to 5 turns off the seat check your maifold bolts for tightness . When setting the timing ya set the timing at full throttel at rated rpm for full advance then ya see where your at on your bottom set . Myself i try real had to had the curb timing set at TDC to +5 degrees. Also what carb are ya running one off the 460 or what ya realy need one off a 806 or 856 gasser same as the dist.

How about your condenser? A bad one will cause hard starting and rough running. If you just changed it, swap your old one back in. Even if you did not change it, double check that you got the wire properly reconnected when you changed the points. By messing with the speed, you're probably going to have timing/advance issues as well. The vet will have to tell you what distributor will work best for the speed you're running that engine. There were many different distributors used on those gassers, each set up for different advance curves. There should be a two-letter code stamped on the housing, post back with that code.
