What was the engineering that required the 1/4 inch thick, mild steel washers on the manifold studs. And those special elongated nuts?
Soft enough to scratch easily with my cheap pocketknife.I stopped by the IH dealer to pick up a couple and he had them, for just 6.83 each! I assume they were soft so they would anneal as they heated up and cooled down, and wouldn't lose or gain temper. Is there another source? Bet I could get the toolmaker here to chop off some 1 inch stock for a lot less than 7 bucks a pop. On a 1 to 10 scale how important is it to have them versus two heavy flat washers?

Gordo

I chucked up some stock in the lathe and bored the correct size hole in it, then I sliced off enough to do the job after getting acquainted with the prices IH charged.

OK Tom, can you put 1/2 doz in an envelope for me. As I measured, .90x.45x1/4. Cottage industry?
Who else needs a six pack? Bet I've got an H part you need.

Hey Tom, while you have the lathe fired up why not crank out a couple hundred of those coupler bolts! I will find a heat treater and we can sell the heck out of them for 10 each. Shoot I will even thread them. hehehehe! $25 for a bolt, what is the world comming to.

Gentleman,
Those are nothing more than manifold washers avaiable at alot of the smaller private owned auto parts stores. I paid like .30 cents each for them last week. The nuts are and should be brass manifold nuts, strong enough to hold the manifold down without leaking, but not so strong that they strip the studs, but rather the nut will strip instead. makes for easier removal if it did strip.

John M. I tried all 5 parts stores in this little town, plus two bearing supply houses. No luck. Are you sure you can get washers 1/2 inch thick, .90 od, .45 (7/16) ID? if you can, get me 20 or so And I will pay for them, plus shipping, plus your gas.

Scotty is right, and you need a washer that thick so it won't bend out over that slot in the manifold. Two thinner washers are not as good as one thick one, but they will work. You could make you're own out of round stock.

Those washers serve as a bearing surface to let the manifold expand and contract. They allow the cut in the manifold that you see at each joint to float open and closed.

I'm no engineer, so I couldn't venture how well a flat washer would work there, but I'd think you'd want to make durned sure it was actually flat, at least on the side that faces the manifold. Like without the lip or ridge that most flat washers have from the stamping process.
