I was alway's wondering why the farmall F-20 and 30 and that series all sounded real nice and throaty, But the later letter series sounded smooth but not the throatyness of the earlier one's,
the m,s and 6's had more size but didnt sound as nice as the oldermone's and that's why i liked the regular, 20 30,12,14,s,
was it the RPM'S OF THE OLDER ONE'S,
or was it the timing and different design of the engine,
Or a combination of thing's,
Kirk,

I have found the same thing. I have a 1936 F-20 with the iron exhaust elbow, and an M with a 2' straight pipe. With both at high speed idle, the F-20 will deafen you while the M just purrs. The M has twice the horsepower and more cubes, but is considerably quieter.

One thing, the F series didn't come with mufflers... An open pipe sounds a lot different, "throatier" as you put it, that's for sure.

sometimes the fan noise can override the exhaust noise. I like the sound of a H Farmall better then a SC Case because you don't hear the fan as much on the H.

Valve timing and size has a lot to do with sound as does compression ratio and stroke and overall CID. Also the size of the exhaust pipe makes a difference. I would say it was the combo in this case. I like the sound of the old ones myself!

Hi Bob,
I just got you letter, and i really agree with you, as the older F-20's have a sound all their own,
I like it even better than Johnny Popper's,
Im salvating for a 35 grey one with red wheel's,
probably when I dont look for one ,
there Itll be in front of me,
Kirk,

Not sure on that, Kirk. I don't know the 20 or 30, but do know how that a friend's F-14 has a different sound from my BN and SuperC.

I don't know tha the engines from the F-14 to the 113 and 123 were all that different in basic design and if I had to venture a guess, it might have to do with the fan and/or the tinwork. I hadn't actually had any distance on hearing my tractors running hard until I let a friend (who kindly lent me the garage space for a coupla weeks to paint the BN) take it up the road. As he got away a little bit, I heard a sound I hadn't heard in years -- I'd forgotten about bein' at the house and hearing that tractor running out in the fields. What you hear is not the exhaust but the fan. So I'm thinkin' maybe the fan might be driving more air of the letter series, or maybe is just resonates more with the shroud and grill than it did on the F-x's.

A thought, anyway.
