Hello,
The thread below about fenders got me wondering,
did all tractors (farmall ) come with fenders.
Or were they a option .
As big as some of these are you would think that IH would put them on just as a safety issue?
I used to have a Ford 8n and the fenders were handy to get up on the tractor and hold while running along. Now I catch my self reaching out for nothing or bounce my hand off the tire.
Or was it a price issue.
thanks Harry

My Dad bought a new Farmall H in 1943. The fenders were on it until he mounted the cultivators in the summer of 1944. They're still off.

I have two sets for my C and SC that haven't been on the tractor 3 months out of the last 30 years. I cultivate tobacco all summer and they are a nuisance. On the C the lift rod for the back set rubs the fender when lifting it.

I grew up in South when Hs, Ms, A, B and G John deeres made up at least 75% of tractors in area and I never saw any of them with fenders or wide front ends. Like georgeky said fenders and mounted planters and cultivators did not go good together.

My Dad was living when I restored the "H" he had for 50 years and I told him I had put fenders on it his response was "What the hell did you do that for?"

I think Farmall probably sold the most tractors without fenders. Allis, ford and some of the others always came with fenders. I agree with georgeky that it was a money thing. Safety was not a issue back in those days.

Very few of the older Farmalls such as letter series came with them. They were optional equipment and most farmers of the time remembered the depression and just wouldn't spend the money for them. Lots of them were taken off as well to make it easier to get on and off with cultivators and such. Most implements mounted to the axles and fenders were in the way.
