Ever since the restoration I had a grind when I first put it into geer. Today I decided I just wasnt pressing the clutch far enough down since I had the seat back so far. So...I did the clutch like I usually do and it was fine then I depressed it as far as it would go (which wasnt much more) and then it made a clanking sound. When I let up on the clutch a tad the constant clanking stopped. Sounded like it was comming from the bell houseing but I aint for certain. Wasnt a bad geer sound like metal grinding or anything like that. Sounded like it was timed to the engine.

Any ideas what that sound is?

Randy: Clutch linkage striking the presure plate. Probably you have some slightly twisted release bearing linkage by now. Look up through clutch inspection hole and have someone depress the pedal. You will see it very quickly.

Hugh,

Im at work alone til next Wednesday so Ill have to wait until I get some help.

If it is what you say then does the tractor have to be split to fix the problem or can you get to it thru the bell houseing cover plate there behind the oil pan?

This tractor is about to drain me.

Wonder why I spelled gear, geer? Never was good at spelin.

Randy: It may not have done much damage. The bigger question is why did it hit. Usually this only happens if free travel on pedal is too great, thus allowing the release bearing carrier to turn a 1/4 turn on shaft. The other possibility is clutch is completely worn out, they will strike then.

OK Hugh,

Guess I need to do some more looking before I ask any more. I dont think its done any damage because I can just not depress it all the way and everything works OK other than it still does grind when you try to put it in gear. It only grinds the first gear you put it in then after that it goes in any gear fine without the grind. Maybe it just needs a little adjustment if Im lucky.
