Well what he wants is to use the super C, and to make money. He wants to get the two row corrugator from the guy we got the tractor from(it will be about 25 dollars) and a blade. He wants to get jobs doing small pastures in town and moving gravel and snow.
What age would you let a kid do this? Would you let a kid do this? I know as a kid growing up on a farm I got jobs running tractors form the neighbors. He loves our tractors and is looking to use them. Ron

There are an awful lot of variables here. It depends on the age, maturity level of the kid, task at hand, people you're dealing with, etc. You have to consider it all, and hope you make the right choice.

I remember my sister and me cutting wheat with a grain binder when I was probably ten and she twelve. Me on the tractor and she on the binder. We survived.

On the other hand, an acquaintance of mine who had more ambition than sense rented more land and sent his 13 year old son out on a 4020 with an 18 foor disc. The inevitable happened. The kid dumped the tractor into a gulley and was killed.

Depending on how the variables fall into place, it can be a great experience, or a huge can of worms. The fact that you're asking for advice tells me you're not completely convinced.

People out here arent like that. They are all farmers or decendents of them. They realise that accidents do happen, and that that is no reason to sue. A super C is a smaller tractor in the letter series, I would put a 10yr. old on it. It just depends on the kid. I'd have a 10yr old bush-hogging in my 13,000 holland any day, if my parents allowed it.

What is he using the money for?

I would, if he was my son, tell him to give me what he earns, and at the end of the summer we'll use that money to go buy a tractor and restore it.
Even if he makes $40 and its a $300 pile of junk that needs $600 to even look like a tractor, and then $1000 to restore, it would be a good learning experience.

Ron, you and your son must have a good bond for you to share this with each other and also with us. I am curious as I'm sure others are regarding your sons age, even though maturity and interest can play a much larger hand in this decision. Even before reading CNKS's post, my thought was of the individual state law regarding youth tractor operation and any program - here in Vernon County sponsored by University Extension (4-H) and local high school vo-ag instructors, held shortly after schools dismiss for the summer. I know liability is something to be considered, but are we going to live our lives 'fearing' what might happen? I would suggest you continue this good interest with your son and BOTH of you 'pick and choose' customers carefully and it can be a wonderful experience carried for a lifetime. I am troubled by youth being denied opportunities because we, who are allegedly adults, step in and think we know it all and in the process squelch their interests. Dummy me here, but is it a regional term - corrugator vs. cultivator a term I familiar with. Any pictures to share? Have someone get the SC, you and your son 'posed' in good light and 'fill the viewfinder' with your image. Please keep us posted and enjoy this experience!

If you feel he is a safe operator go ahead. Others will have to decide for themselves if they want to hire him. I have a 10 year old mowing my lawn in town with a push mower. His parents live across the street and supervise. I just come home and find the lawn mowed. I know I was doing custom combining when I was 16.

Hi, Age is not as important as interest and ability, I get kids to drive the baler while I run the bale wagon. The most important thing is can I trust them to stay alert and follow instructions, if not they don't do it. Some are much better at 12 than others at 16 or even a lot older, some of the girls are very good. I think the most important thing is do you feel he will be safe, if you have doubts wait a year and see about it then. Good luck, Chuck

Ron, the other guy's probably have a good point about the liability and lawyers in this screwed up society we are in. I bought my old C when I was 12 years old and went to work with it that summer. I cultivated many acres of tobacco and corn for neighbors who didn't like that job very well. I spent it, but I have made a small fortune with that little tractor over the years. I tell my wife that it paid for everything else and it did go a long way on it. I also cut lots of hay with by the acre. In the spring and fall I plowed almost 40 gardens every year as well. I know what he is going through as I couldn't wait to get out of bed in the mornings and work that old tractor. I tell everyone now days that is the only reason I still farm. Maybe you could check into some liability insurance.

Although what he is doing is not farming, call your local county agent and see it your state has a minimum age for kids to operate farm machinery for other farmers on a farm (I think kids working for their parents are exempt in Kansas, not sure). This usually includes a tractor safety course. Then take it from there. I assume you are in a "rural" town, and not a big city -- there the rules probably change.

Suggestion -
Idaho Ron, Ask yourself these questions:
1) How old is the boy?
2) Are there any lawyers in (your) town?
3) Would the sharks - er, I mean lawyers - be attracted/stimulated/excited/motivated into a feeding frenzy by the size of your net worth and/or liability insurance coverage?
In the last 40 years this country has evolved from: "Aye, sometimes these things happen" to: "Somebody's going to pay for this." It's now an acceptable (modern) American way to EA$Y $TREET.... unfortunately.

Nope - not a chance- age isn't the factor - not in today's law suit society.

Liability for an accident or a law suit for a job not performed to the property owners satisfaction could cost you, the parents, everything.

I would have to agree. Unless he or you want to get insurance, setup a real business it's just too risky. I grew up on a farm but just have a house in the country myself. My SC doesn't do anything much except for in the winter when it goes to work plowing my driveway. I feel kind of bad that I can't go do any of my neighbours driveways just so I get to play with the SC, I have fun at my age (48) playing on the tractor even if it is snowing and 20 below. just not worth the chance now days though. Good for him though wanting to work, too many kids don't have that drive in them now. Maybe he can get a farmer to hire him and he can play, er work with their equipment.
