I have an IH F806 with a worn out c301 engine.Sence the tractor stays at farm #2 and is used for loader duties, making hay on this farm. With the addition of the pole barn that has electricity now.I can now plug a diesel in during the winter for sure starting.Thats the reason I purchased the gas tractor 29 years ago. None of the barns had electricity to them. The tractor has served me very well.I love this tractor and I want to keep it.I have found an IH salvage yard that has a D407 and D414 both rebuilt with warranty.Im almost 99% sure that D407 will fit with no problems. But will the D414 fit in there too?Or am I wrong and neither one of them will work.Does anyone know for sure,or have installed one of these engines in an 06 series? I thank you for your help and advise.I know that I havent posted in quite a while. But thats a differant posting. John

I vote for repowering your tractor with the diesel, provided you've got the equipment to do the job yourself. If you have to pay someone else to do the labor, the cost will be though the roof. I'd go with the 407 as it is just a bored and stroked version of the 361 that the 806 Diesel had. The 414 will be a little more work to make fit as it is wider at the front, you'd need 66 series frame rails and spacer plates between the front bolster, or you'd need to machine the front cover to fit between the 806 frame rails. The upside to the 414 is that it will be cheaper in the long run, should you ever need an overhaul. 361/407's are very expensive to overhaul.

Hi, Quite a job to change from gas to diesel, if you don't want to spend the money for complete overhaul there are a lot of 715 combines junked with good engines, they have the 301. If you can get one it may be a reasonable way to rebuild yours. Good luck, Chuck

Still a lot of work maken a change from a combine engine to tractor engine lots of parts to swap out lots of gskts to buy picemeal . it is just not a matter of pulling one out of a combine and just stuffing it in to a tractor carb gov. dist . maifolds both ft covers and rear plates oil pan pick up tubes thenya still have know idea on what shape that engine is in or how it was taken care of . If ya pull the org. engine out and have it bored to the next size and do a total rebuild then ya know what you have in the end. Myself if i am going to go thru all the work of pulling the engine i only want to do this once . For me the FUN of pullen engines and swappen parts left along time ago.

As mentioned below, there are a lot of diffences in a gas and diesel engine. Why not just keep the 806 as a gas and buy yourself a different tractor with a factory installed diesel? Anything is possible with these old tractors but by the time you purchase/fabricate all of the conversion pieces, is it going to be worth it? Just my $0.02 worth. Randy

The gasser is gettin' tired the way it sounds. Probably not really an option to just leave it. It's either rebuild, repower, or sell the tractor for scrap value because it's slightly more than worthless with a tired gas engine.

It's expensive and a royal PITA to convert to diesel, but if you get the engine for a reasonable price, and you use the tractor enough, it'll pay for itself:

The first year after we put the D360 in the 756, gas usage went down by 900 gallons and diesel usage only went up by 300 gallons. We got the engine CHEAP, and the mechanic who did the conversion took the piston-slapping C291 gasser and any other leftover parts in trade for his labor (we think he enjoyed the challenge more than anything), so Dad only had pay for the engine and parts. It's been a few years now, and with fuel prices the way they are... That engine made a tractor out of the 756, and has more than paid for itself.

Make sure you get the front plate, back plate, and frame rails off the diesel tractor to go along with that D407. Otherwise the tractor will be about 1" longer, causing the hood and power steering lines to be too short.

Radiator inlet on the bottom is on the wrong side, so you need to figure out what to do with that...

The injector pump also needs a return line to the fuel tank, which the gas tank doesn't have. You will probably need to sacrifice your fuel level sensor for this.

Throttle linkages will be completely different.

Those are the major issues I can think of.

So: I'd go with the DT 407, probably the best engine IH ever built, and much better reputation than the 414.

Like you, I think the 407 will be the easier change, however your going to run into things like fan position, fuel filters, air breather, etc. that may require some modification. Both will be a direct bolk up at flywheel, but the frame rails may be different spacing for the 414.
