Went and bought a HF 20 ton press that was on sale, plus 15% off this weekend to see if I could get the last 3 pistons out by pressing them out as recomended by Tractor Vet.

Well the first one made a loud bang and popped loose, every 1/2 inch of pressure it would bang and move more, wife came in the shop wondering what I was up to since it was so loud.

Got 1 out and the 2nd came out the same way, but, that 3rd one is still under ram pressure since Saturday and has not popped free yet, will give it more time I guess and see what happens.

Worked on the head also, my neighbor has all the good tools for working on these engines third party image

Some more pics on the link below.

neblinc, Try this....Take the block out of the press, get it outside, fill the #3 cylinder with diesel, add a splash of gas, set on fire, let it burn itself out, Now>>>>go press that piston out. the heat of the fire will expand the sleeve and allow the piston to be pressed out more easilly. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.
PS if that piston is more to TDC then you may need to repeat the process 2 or 3 times. Later.

Randy, for the sake of good entertainment, I think you should quit your job and work on the '50 H full time. This is far too interesting to watch to not get weekly updates on!

You should try to push those pistons out the top. When water gets in the engine it goes to the cylinder and piston. Then rusts solid. Very little water ever gets between the sleeve and the block because of the press fit. Going from the bottom out the top , most likely the sleeve will give up easily. You are going to have to take them out anyway.
