H Won't Start

Yep, looks like I was ahead of myself. Thought I was home free.

My newly rebuilt H won't start. Here's what I've got:

-Motor all new, head serviced. -110lbs. pressure in each cylinder. -Good blue spark at all plugs.
-#1 at TDC and rotor at tower 1.
-Fuel drips from carb when choked.
-New starter and battery spinning motor fast.

Not even a pop. I think I'm not getting fuel up and in. As I've been working on this for 3-4 days, plugs have never been wet, not even a little.

It seems to my inexperienced mind that even if my timing were as far off as it could be that I'd at least get pops and afterfires out of it. No?

Was cleaning the carb out, so I had some cleaner in my hand, sprayed that in a sparkplug hole, got a pop or two. What could be keeping fuel from moving up? The float is not sticky at all.

Lost and depressed, ready to take her apart and sell for parts. Not really, but almost.

Stumped Grampa, hoping you guys have an idea or two.

This is a long thread, haven't read it all yet and probably won't, all possibilities have likely been covered. Disconnect the hose between the carb and air cleaner. Put your hand over the intake to the carb and hit the starter. If it doesn't try to suck your hand into the carb you have a intake manifold leak -- If bad enough no gas gets to the plugs.

Got her going! High speed adjust was all the way in, apparently starving her. Let it out and off she went.

If gas drips from the carb when choked, it should get to the engine if you have good suction. (you say it doe"s) I think you have it timed tdc between the exaust & intake. Try switching the plug wires. Switch 1 & 4 , 2 &3 and see what happens.

I see you have checked for suction. I would remove a plug from the bottom of the carburetor and see if any gas runs out. There has to be something messed up in the carburetor. Hal

One thing I did notice is that when I hold my hand over the carb, after I remove it a lot of fuel runs out. Normal?

It should pull that fuel into the combustion chamber when you have your hand over the throat of the carburetor. That's how we checked cars and trucks that had mechanical fuel pumps years ago. The engines would run as long as you held your hand over the carburetor. Are you 100% sure your distributor is in time. Even if it's out 180 degrees you will still have fire to your plugs, it just isn't firing at the right time. You need those plug wires installed on the cap in this order too. 2-1
4-3

I would pull No1 plug and bring that piston to TDC on the compression stroke. When you're at TDC
your notch on the damper pulley should be aligned with pointer. Both valves on No1 cylinder should be closed too. Remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. Hal

Well, I've got her popping now. If I choke her by hand, then remove hand and let fuel get sucked up it will run, firing on all four, so I think timing is ok. But after that fuel is gone she won't keep going.

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while someone makes an attempt to start the tractor. You should have good suction on your hand. If you don't have good suction check the intake manifold for being tight and for sealing.

You are not getting fuel to the plugs, so you need to ensure all the orfices and holes in the carborator are clean. Something is plugged in there.

Red, check to see that you have reinstalled the carb linkage from the governor to the carb. It is easy to get these not inline and have a non operating carb.

Was the carb rebuilt also? All it takes is a tiny bit of crud to block a passage so no fuel can get to the cylinders.

Do you have your high idle/load scew around 3 to 3 1/2 turns out from bottom for a starting point?

Everything points to the fuel system since you can get it to pop using carb cleaner in the cylinder.

I did not rebuild the carb, looks like I should. I do have the high idle 3 1/2 out. The jet seems clear, I can blow through it without restriction.

That's the main jet adjusting screw that you opened. I was going to mention that. You may need to open that more when the tractor is under heavy load. Glad you have it running. Hal

Ok, so you know your compression and combustion are ok. You've got fuel coming to the carb, and air sucking pretty well too.

Where do you have your throttle?

Did you do any tinkering on the carb?

Any chance you have something grounding you out when you push down the clutch lever to start it, or sit on the seat, or anything strange like that?

Haven't even sat in the seat yet. I did pull all the brass out of the carb when I painted it, but searched the archives here for info on settings and think I'm pretty good there. Don't have the throttle hooked up yet.

Yep, new gaskets. I'm going to check the manifold again to make sure it's tight, but surely should be. Carb same.

Have you checked the air cleaner to see if it is stopped up? I am assuming with a fresh engine that it has a new manifold gasket.

I actually have the tube removed from air cleaner to carb. Strong vaccuum pull with hand over carb.

Since you have good vacuum and plug remain dry I suspect the Carb at this point.You might give us the history of it,brand etc.CENTAUR

You know, I don't know. Has an IH stamped in it, but seems like I've read that there is a Zenith and another kind. How might I tell.

When I got the tracor she ran. Pulled brass out of carb to paint and I think I put everything back in right, and researched archives for setings, but I could've gotten it wrong.

Any help appreciated.

Brian, I've rebuilt a bunch of those H carburetors, but it is really tough to diagnose any problems without actually being there or at least holding the carb in my hands. If you can't make it work, send me an e-mail.

Does it help diagnose if while turning over I hold my hand over the intake, (was checking for suction), and when I remove quite a bit of fuel runs out?

This is an early H carb, right?

For sure that is an H carburetor. Early or late, they are all pretty much the same. Yours does have the fuel bowl drain, so we will assume that the H was originally a distillate or kerosene burner, but that carb can be rebuilt using the kit for the gasoline only carb, which only makes sense because you can no longer buy the distillate fuel.
