You guys nailed it on the head. New battery and it fired right. I didn't know you couldn't pull start one with a stone dead batt and a dist. set up. Makes since though. It still is not charging but the lights will work. Something for another day. I need to do some mowing with this machine, will it hurt anything to leave the hood off? It's kind of a pain to take on and off and I would like to get to the bottom of my chargeing problems. Didn't know if the hood aided in cooling or support in some way.
My cost so far,
$20 for new wire and light bulbs
$64 for battery, old one was 3 weeks past warenty
$60 Co pay at urgent care after flipping battery acid in my left eye. Oh it's been a fun day.
Paul

Paul,

Just hook it up to the battery charger at the end of the day until you get time to look at the charging problem.

You are good with the sheet metal off. This dang thing runs cool anyway. Just service your air breather and get on with it.

Paul: So I need not tell the Mrs. you and Jimmy will be here for dinner tomorrow night. I learned tonight that Jimmy is not back to work yet. Oh these old carcasses, just don't bounce back like they once did. Then we have these guys with battery acid scars and wounds. I knew I was right when I made the invitation, you Missourians need a vacation in Canada. Should follow the lead of your fellow New Yorker.

Hugh, you had better be careful. I have seen more than one MO boy get up off his death bed at the invite of a steak diner. You will be shocked some morning to look out and see two grey headed MO boys with big bellies walking up your drive. You are right about needing a vacation. I'm taking the family up to Kansas City to watch the Royals and the Yankees on Thursday. That puts me about 2.5 hours closer to you.

Paul: A good ball game will do wonders. 2.5 hours makes a good practice run. Not the same percentage but back two months ago when we were in Indiana, Gray Richmond reminded me we were half way to his place. So I reminded myself, if I can go to Indiana, do 3 hours business and back home before dark, Missouri is not that far away. And remember it's the same distance both ways, or like Mike Soldan claims, every mile of road has 2 miles of ditches.

Learned a hard lesson years ago when I was trying to jump a dead battery. No matter how long I tried to charge that battery and/or jump it would never even turn over. Replaced battery cables, etc for a week before buying a battery. Problem solved. Battery was obviously shorted, and current takes the path of least resistance which was in this case the battery itself.

It shouldn"t hurt to leave the hood off Paul, I have worked it the field before on the old H we had when I was a kid.

If you have a mag it will pull start and run,if its a gen it will only run untill the battery runs down, and the tractor will not pull start with a dead battery,if the gen is charging the tractor will run,a distributer ignition must get its power from some where

If the battery was totally garbage and shorted out it was probably sucking up any juice that the generator was trying to put out. If the generator was working you could have disconnected the battery and started it by pulling it (if the generator was polarized). That statement just gave me an idea of what could be part of your problem. You may need to polarize the generator now that you have a good battery. I don't remember the process but it has been adressed here before. Good luck. Randy

To polarize, touch jumper wire momentarily from the "batt" lug on the regulator to the "A" terminal post on the gen. As soon as you get one small spark, stop. This is done with tractor not running and switch off. mike durhan

To keep that battery from discharging I would remove the ground cable. You may need to keep a battery charger on your battery overnight. Your engine would have probably started when pulling it
if the generator was working. I know you're glad its running. Hal

To quote Norm "Theres No More Important Rule Than to Wear These, Safety Glasses".
Run it with out the hood. We had one H we ran for years with out one, because I ran over it!

Good one. If you"re going to listen to someone, you can"t go wrong with Norm.

Always nice to get an occational update. You seldom find out if someone"s advice worked or not.

Acid in the eye!!!!! ! You're a lucky man if you still can see with both eyes. Dang!!

I don't know of any problem with no hood. Hope there isn't a short in the wiring system or something to drain your battery down fast. How long do you think it will run before discharging the battery and stopping your tractor?

The acid in the eye hurt very little for the first 20 mins. Then I as I got hot and started swetting real good my eye was on fire. Spent some time laying on my back with the garden hose running in my eye. Got some better. Thought I would put some Visine in it and that put me to my knees. It felt like it was burning a hole in my eye. Washed that out and headed to urgent care. They numbed it and flushed real good and sent me home with some junk to put in it. Dr said I had what looked like two small blisters {ha, they feel big} kind of like a welding burn he said.

If you had rubbed baking soda in your eye first just as soon as you got the acid in it then flushed it with water it proabley wouldn't have blistered it. Baking soda will neturalize the acid, but when you started swetting the water activated the acid.

Visine constricts the blood flow in the eyes to "...get the red out" and what you want is good blood flow for cleansing and healing. Aerodynamically, your Farmall will be a real drag without the full sheet metal, but then you aren't doing 60. Just think, you got three 'free' weeks on that battery, and who says '...planned obsolescents'. Glad you got it going and had a fun day.
