our recently acquired 685 only lets you shift into 2 of the 4 gears (maybe 1 and 2?). it is the pair that has the shorter lever on the tranny top that is unavailable. there is a bearing type cap directly accross from that lever on the right side that has its 2 bolts removed that tries to move when you attempt to select those 2 gears. c-ih parts site confirms it is 3/4 being problematic. they are calling the part the pivot interlock. also all the tranny cover bolts are finger tight only. is this a frequent problem or is there something likely abused?
thanks

i opened the cover enough to see inside, looked inside, all looked well. i added the bolts that were missing, and freed up the counter-shift-shaft/pivot interlock shaft that was stuck (maybe why the bolts were removed). after i put it all together, it still wouldnt shift. then i used brute force with the tractor running(for a constant oil bath), and suddenly got one gear, then the other to return. seems the detent balls or possibly the sliding gear were corroded from sitting or non use. all good now, clicks in and out perfectly. it's awesome having all 4 gears now. might find the real tractor inside this highway machine yet!

I am not framiliar with that trans, but I do know that the positioning of an interlock shaft (preventing shifting the trans in ways it cannot operate) is very important. If the parts diagram shows bolts in the Wiggling component, I would get their size, and put new ones in. I would also tighten the remainder as they may be crucial to the preload applied to coponents. It is a place to start, and is less invasive than other options. The worst possible situation is that the blts could be loose because the former owner had been inside with an intent to repair with marginal understanding, and no manual. JimN
