356980RI is the number IH used for engine block casting. If 138101 is the engine serial # that engine is from a early 400 tractor. That would match up with the date code of 10-6-Z, november 6 1954. You have to many numbers in the date code you posted so I'm guessing the date code is realy 10-6-Z.

I thought after I posted that something wasn't right, as I was fairly sure my 400 had the Z in the casting codes. I went and looked this morning and it does.

Thanks for the replys, That number 2 is seperated from the 10-6-Z by a few inches but the site didn't like all that space between the two sets of numbers and put them together. I knew the original block had been replaced, so an early 400 block makes sense. Thanks again!!

Welcome, but I made a mistake in the 10 month being november. 10 th month would be October.

Forgot to include J means tractor as sold was equiped with a rockford clutch. F means it was assembled at farmall works instead of Louisville Ky.

Were some of the 400's built in Louisville?

I didn't think so, but you never know until you ask. When I was at the Louisville plant all I saw were 140's. Of course that was in the mid 70's. I don't remember seeing any Cubs there then either, but I was fairly sure they were building them there too.

The tractor serial number means you have a 1953 SM. The first engine number is a part number. The C-264 means it is a IH 264 Cubic inch engine. 138101 is the engine serial number and 2-10-Z is the casting code. It means the engine was cast Feb 10th of 53
