I tore into the engine on the 39 H I bought last weekend. It was stuck so I pulled the head and to my suprise things looked really nice inside. I just had 1 piston that was stuck so went to work on it but while I was pressing on it I had the sleeve break. I was able to get the sleeve and piston out and was able to get the piston out of the sleeve. Looking how nice this is inside I would kinda like to reuse the pistons, just add new rings and rod bearings. Is it possible to get by with putting in 1 sleeve either new or used or would I be asking for trouble? This tractor will be painted up and maybe used very lightly for no more the 10 hours a year so really not sure I want to spend the money on a full rebuild kit. Any thing else I should be looking at while I have things apart? Thanks Paul

akb, you are certainly right. I must have had m kits on my mind as they go a whole 1/8 at a time.

Paul,

I've got 3 good used original sleeves out of my 42 H. You can have one or all three for cost of shipping if you want.

Paul, you could do that if you can find a sleeve. They are sold in matching set with pistons, rings and pins. You may want to measure the bore and see if it is stock. 3 and 3/8 is the stock bore if it has over bore pistons which many do it will be 3 and 1/2 inches. If it has standard bore you may want the new over bore sleeves and pistons, as they add quite a bit of power to them. Making it the same displacement as the Super H. I do reuse all my pistons at overhauls because I have all IH fire craters or M&W's that can't be bought new anymore. If you can find a good used sleeve it will work, but check it out good before installing it as it could be trash. To each his own, but if I had it down I would go with all new over bore sleeves and it will outlast you when finished.
