I have recently upgraded my 1942 Farmall M to 12v.The starter was bad so I have replaced it with a new one. The tractor starts and runs fine but here is the main problem, The large spring on the starter drive has coiled itself onto itself and locks up the starter. It is as though it has overtorqued. I have never seen this done before.I have checked and re-checked all the wiring schematics but I must be missing something. Can anyone Help? Thanks

Also when using a 6 volt starter on 12 volts, use a wider , thicker brush. The wider brushes do not engage drive with as much snap. James

thats what can happen when you go to 12v. i would have tried 6v with the new starter. the new one did come with a new bendix or not.

This can happen but I have 4 tractors that have been on 12 volts for over 25 years and 3 of them put in 60 hour weeks often for several years and it has not happened to any of them.

Thanks NDS Please see my response to Gene also, because of having other converted tractors this one bothered me. The Tractor had been sitting and there was a lot of rattles which masked the starter drive that HAD to be ticking... I just didn't hear it!! Thank You again!

Thanks Gene I have other equpiment also converted and I have never had a concern, As it turned out the starter was in need of shims... (The new one).... so... a new bendix and some shims and all is well!! Thanks for your input

PF, In cases where you upgrade from 6 to 12 volts but still use a 6 volt starter, they can work fine for years buttttt ttt they can indeed have one super strong kick in torque. However, as my friend Old mentioned yours may have just been bad to begin with????? If you take it back under warranty you might NOT wanna mention youre using 12 volts on a 6 volt starter if thats what youre doing lol..... .... If you had the starter rebuilt as a 12 then there shouldnt have been any problem and the bendix ought to have been fine provided the starter n ring gear n all is in line and mounted tight etc.

Sure all is mounted n aligned n tight????

John,Thanks,After I posted I was looking at the old and new starter. I noticed that the starter drive depths were different. The old starter is shimmed at the nose bearing about a 1/4in difference in depth. I am looking at the tips of the starter drive and I am wondering if they may have engaged the flywheel just a little corkscrewing the spring. I am not sure but I am going to get another starter drive and try to shim it down, It also appears that the new starter shaft my be shorter itself which may present another concern.....

The original style drive with the spring uses three washers on the drive end. The first one has a smaller ID and goes against the shoulder on the shaft to control end play. The other two go on the shaft past the shoulder and are used to control the travel of the drive. There should be one thick one and one thin one. If you replace the drive with the newer style without the spring the two larger ones are not needed.

Thanks Hobby Farm, Please note my response to JohnT and you are correct! I really can relate to new not being as good as the old stuff. I used to have several different parts places that had anything I wanted. But farming here in Mi. has dried up for the most part and there are only a couple of places left. I scrounge and search all the time....
