Just got done with my tranny overhaul (see previous post re: metric bearings). I replaced all the bearings except both inner and outer bearings on both axleshafts, for a total of 11 bearings, and all 9 seals. The bill for parts ran just over $900.I originally got into it to change the brakes, but there was so much oil in the brake covers that I decided to do the bull pinion seals. It escalated from there. The input shaft bearings were the most trashed, followed by the mainshaft pilot bearing and mainshaft bearing. The input shaft and mainshaft slopped side to side at the pilot bearing almost 0.100". I cant imagine the strange loads on the gear teeth that this created. Originally I thought I might have been missing a tooth on 2nd gear, but I think the noise was just attributed to shaft misalignment. After noting the slop, I was surprised that the gear teeth actually looked pretty darn good. The countershaft bearings werent too bad, but the were relatively cheap in comparison, so I changed them. The bull pinion bearings and diff bearings were bad enough to mangle the brake drum seals, so they got swapped too. Now that its back together and running, the gear whine is rather excessive while in gear under load. Im attributing it to gears running 'right' after having been running 'wrong' for so long, and they will have to re-wear a little (I hope). Splitting the case in all wasnt that big of a job (if you are faced with having to do this, dont be intimidated). An engine hoist on the tranny and a tall floor jack under the bell housing made it easy.
