I recently saw on Martin Auction"s website that a Super MTA recently brought $8000. Does anyone know what was so special about that particular tractor or is that the going price now-a-days? The only thing I can see is that it may have been a diesel, but can"t read the decal very well. I have seen some good restored SMTAs go for around $5000. This one was original. I by no means am critisizing as it wasn"t my money, but I found it very interesting. Thanks for your time.

Pretty nice resto SMAT, engine NOT rebuilt sold at auction here in SD for 8800 last summer. The Rex Balcomb auction in Mitchell. It was advertised in RPM. But the high price for the day went to my neighbors consigned tractor. A Ford 871 Diesel It went at 9800, but it was drop dead perfect, everything new.

Now I don't know anything about this particular auction, but I have seen strange things at estate auctions where different members of the family want a particular item. If the kids want Dad's or Granddad's tractor or Grandma's dresser (etc.) normal prices will not apply.

Sounds high but..... just priced a used lawn tractor,$$$ WOW! Put in perspective, I could justify the MTA before the mower.

Im NOT a JD guy because

2 years ago, we moved and my mom spent $5000 on a JD mower. BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY EVER!!! Gets stuck in the middle of the dry lawn, wont cut grass 3" high (stalls and I have to go get the bush-hog) and is always in the shop. I cant talk her out of selling it. It took me FIVE HOURS to put the deck on it after removing the snowblade(a complete joke). I once used it for a wagon ride and ran over some old cornstalks and basicially destroyed this muffler guard in front of the tractor. ( $500 in repairs, $100 part (completely unnessicary) $200 in labor and $200 for pick-up&delivery) I hate the deere-ler and if you like the JDs, im not trying to critisize you, just saying theyre not for me!

Pretty easy to tell the diesels, the exhaust is on the wrong side.

As Gene says, at an auction anything goes. The SMTA at the time was "revolutionary", although it is nothing more than a Super M with TA and independent PTO. Add to that the one year of production, and you have the reason for the price. Some people will pay that much for a good original and do none of the cosmetics. In some ways that makes them more valuable than restored ones. It simply depends on the point of view of the buyer and the amount of money he has. And, the price of collector type items does not have to make any practical sense at all.

finding one in good condition means a lot location and at an auction all it takes is two wanting the same thing. not a bad price at all as shipping could cost 1000 easy then new tires so just stop and do the math. i can get 3500 out of a good B original maybe even more if iwould ask finding something ready to paint and not having to run all over for parts ect and if you want one you pay the price or do without. there is never an end to those who wont pay anything then go all over getting parts ect. had one cheapy wouldnt drive 60mi to look at my tractor but bought one then i seen all the parts he needed to finish his bargain and mine was all there sometimes just do the math.

It was made for only one year for starters. Had all the new options.TA,IPTO,live hydraulics, can be titted with fast hitch. Sounds a bit high to me also, but folks with money can buy what they want, when they want.

Titted? What's on your mind?

I think you meant to say fitted. ;)

Mike, I think you are right. I am suprised the filter let that go through. The other day I got a T to close to the word it and the filter stopped that.

Unless of course the valve stems have some kind of quick attach arrangement.
