First tractor and trying to convert to three point hitch..... .....
The fast hitch receivers on my 1957 Farmall 450 are spaced @ about 26" apart with just a bit of side to side play in the arms/receivers. I bought a pair of curved tong adapters thinking it would give me a bit more flexibility. Quickly discovered I didn't have enough side to side play in the fast hitch arms to make them work either way. Couldn't get them spaced properly to connect to the pins on my disc which are 26" apart. It's now obvious to me I simply need to get a pair of straight tongs which should work just fine. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something???? Also, trying to figure out what the purpose is of the arm which comes off the tractor and connects to the right side fast hitch arm. Looks like maybe sway control or some sort of adjustment. Appreciate any help.

You don;t have a picture of that adapter with adjustable width do you? Id sure like to see what that looks like. I have had the same problem with the one on my 460U not going wide enough to slip over the pins on my grader blade. I ended up putting the adapters on the blade and then slipping them into the fast hitch

I don't have a photo of it but I'm going to try to find a parts drawing on it. The one I have I paid $75 for it a couple of years ago. To change the 3 point width you have to unbolt the end of the arms that attach to the main frame of it. It has spacers and the arms can be put on the opposite sides for narrow or wide. I think you could get 4 to 6 different widths by those adjustments.

I own a 560 with fast hitch which is very similar to the 450 fast hitch. I have straight arms that I use with a quick hitch that is 26" wide. You don't have to have the arms separate to hook up to implements. I did add heavy steel below the quick hitch to make a 5" raise as fast hitch lift is approximately 5" lower than three point. I tried hitching to the 3 point cultivator direct to the the straight arms and just barely raised the cultivator to clear the ground. I also own an IH fast hitch 3 point adapter which works like a quick hitch. You can adjust the width on these for different width 3 point implements.

Yes you need the the straight ones. The ones you have are for category 2 implements which are 32 inches. There is a sway control arm for the hitch. There should be a couple of pull pins in it. You remove the pins for plowing or other ground engaging work. This makes the tractor steer easier with the plow in the ground and prevents damage to the hitch parts. If you are not plowing you will never really need to worry with that.

Thanks alot for your response and clarification. I'll take the curved ones back and find a pair of straight tongs to purchase. What confused me though even more was that I saw some new curved ones on ebay specifically listed to fit Farmall 450. They advertised would provide 26" spacing if used the narrow way, and, 32" spacing if switched to the wider spacing. Once I discovered my receivers were already @ 26" with little side to side play I just couldn't figure out how they could ever work on 450. Whatever???

Thanks again for your help.
