I've never seen one of these before. What is that brass looking thing behind the carb?

There is supposed to be a petcock in there, but it does not look like that. It is not a JD petcock.

Ok, so it's a coolant drain. Thanks. That goes in line with what the owner told me about the radiator drain. This tractor came from Eastern Washington, and they drained teh coolant daily after work to prevent the engine from cracking during a freeze. So they added a quicker radiator drain... and apparently they added this block drain as well.

What should go there? I don't think I'm going to keep that pet-cock on there.

Originally had one of those plugs with the wings on it so you could remove it by hand. OEM Tractor Parts has them...

That be a drain for the block. Open it up to drain coolant out of the engine block. It doesn't look stock so some one probablty added it at so point

Hi Mike,

That's a pet-cock.

All the old 2-pop John Deeres used to have 'em installed in the cylinders to release the compression.

My dad told of always draining the water during cold weather as they never ran anti-freeze. Looks like someone wanted to speed up the process and installed a petcock.

Anti-freeze must not have come into wide spread usage until the 50's or there abouts.
