I recently purchased a 1937 F20 and rebuilt the carb and mag,adj the valves and govenor,new wires and plugs,flushed the engine and replaced oil with 10W40.It runs great with no smoke or blowby,but the oil pressure reads only about 10 lbs at 3/4 throttle.What should it be,and whats the proper oil weight? Thanks,Dave

I was told that 10-20s and Regulars ran 6lbs right out of the box. I have a cousin who rebuilt his Regular and put a aftermarket oil gauge on it and would show pressure so he wouldn't run the tractor for a couple years. I found out about the 6lbs and he bought the right gauge for it and the needle went right up to where it was supposed to run at so now he takes it to shows. The oil pump only lubes the oil troughs for the rod dippers to catch and a line goes to the timing gears/governor area. the rest is slash lubed and there are troughs cast into the block to catch the oil and direct it to the mains and cam bearings. Oil flow is good! no flow is bad! I use straight 30wt or even 40wt if hot out and working hard. I use only detergent oil if the engine has an oil filter. If no filter use non detergent and clean out the pan once a year to get the sludge out and change oil more often.

I have recently rebuilt a farmall regular. As a machinist, I have made all new guides, bushings, new pistons, sleeves, main bearings, tappets....Everything, literallty everything is to tight tolerances; even the oil pump was precisionally rebuilt and ground including a NOS pressure relief spring. I am getting 20lbs at start up and about 17lbs hot. I do not suggest using a multi-grade as it will thin out way too much and you will melt a babbit rod bearing. I am running straight 30 HD in this engine, and in my other regulars, 10-20, f-30, etc with very good results. After using the 30 HD for about 7 yrs, I took apart one of the rod bearings that I had hand scrapped in and found no scoring, nor damage. I use this tractor all the time, plow, buzzsaw, and pull. I have been told by old IHC techs that anything over 4lbs was ok as long as the volume is there. Big thing.....make sure the oil is up to the top petcock!

F-20's rely on splash lubrication for the connecting rods. It is NOT a pressurized crankshaft as in modern engines. A low pressure oil pump pulls oil from the sump, thru the filter, then down thru three external tubes to lube the forward & aft crank ball bearing, cam shaft gears, and also fill a galley that fills little banana-shaped trays under each lower connecting rod for the lower bearing cap to splash thru. Take one of the crank case covers off then start & idle the engine. You can see the system operating then. Not much oil will splash out at a slow idle.

10 psi is lots. Don't forget to oil the rocker arm tray each morning though!

David,I dont know for sure,but I beleive thats fine.Use non dertergent becaues the F20 has a dipper system and High Detergent will foam

Is the oil pump good and the screen clean? It is important to have a clean screen.

I don't have a spec for oil pressure but the relief valve spring should have a free length of 1 1/4" and a length of 15/16" at 2.6 Lbs.

That engine is a low pressure system since it doesn't have pressurized rod bearings. My guess would be that 10 PSI is fine.

For comparison, spring test pressures for models A through M range from 26 to 42 lbs. Oil pressure on those engines should max out at about 45 to 75 lbs.
