My 806 was running poor, checked comp. and found the head gasket was blown on #2, sent the head to the machine shop for the works, pulled the pistons out, the center 4 have burnt spots on top, like it melted a little. Maybe that is from ether or poor injectors. I don't like the look of the pistons, so I am going to replace them, but should I leave the sleeves, they look really good, I know it is a lot of work to fit the new sleeves, and I need this tractor for harvest. I am going to check the injectors before I put it together, put in new bearings. Just wondering if I should leave the sleeves, or just put it all in new. Thanks.

DIY ing a D361 is not something one should tackel as they have quarks that if not done correctly it will self distruct . Over the years they have a tendency to have core shift in the block . It is wist to have the engine pulled out of the tractor due to age and do a total rebuild . myself if i am doing one i have the linebore redone and also if the block has never been bored to the oversize sleeves i have that done and done off the center line of the crank.then recondition both ends of the rods . When having the head done the machine shop had best know what to set the valve hight at or ya will end up with a real hard starter . Then do the injection system . When installen the pistons after the sleeves are PRESSED in ya need to use a DIAL bore gauge to check each hole for any wrinkelen of the sleeve then ya have to Mic. each hole and piston and FIT each piston to the hole you are placing it in . Of all the engines that i have built over the years there are only two that just plum scare the hell-o out of me and they are the 361-407 and any Detroit as if ya messed up she will come unglued . If done wright and ya fallow a good maintance plan she can last way over 10000 hrs. ANd when ya get the first 50 hrd on her ya MUST retorque the head even though ya did that after ya warmed her up the first time along with resetting the valves.
