If the motor is stuck, then there is plenty of info on the forum about how to unfreeze it. Depends on if you are looking for a project or if you want something to start up and get to work. Even if it ws free... you shouldn't be able to push it while it is in gear, if you could then there are more serious problems! The 444 was a pretty tough tractor, my Dad and Grandpa ran the one they had from new (1967) to the early 80's when it was traded for a 484 diesel. It ran the 7' Mower conditioner, pulled all of the forage wagons in early summer and fall, and planted the corn and oats for 2 dairy farms (about 150 acres each) plus the usual extra duties farmers can dream up.

the rear tires look ok. i just quickly tried rotating it without pulling the spark plugs and it wouldnt turn. i also tried putting it in gear and pushing it and it wouldnt turn. im gonna try to check it and the ford 631 out better tomorrow. are the hydrolics expensive on them. it has a bushhog on it that they have chains holding it up. the radiator looks clean and the tractor is in pretty good shape from the little i have looked at it. thanks chris

Without a starter how can you determine if the rest works ok ?
I have not had to replace my starter but I think a rebuilt starter is about $150 online.
I have an 2444. Industrial version of 444.

I bought it in good working condition a few years ago for 4k with a 2050 loader on it. And decent working condition.

How are the rear tires ? They are not cheap.
Also does it have dual cylinder hydrostatic steering ?

Chris,

I bought my 444 from our local dealer here in "Slower Lower Delaware" for $2700. It runs well but needs some minor repairs - small leaks, etc. the only major thing I have found is that possibly the PTO internal gears or engagement parts will need replacing.

I'm no expert, and hopefully some of the more veteran tractor guys can give you better price advice than I can. I've seen in the ads on this site and others with 444s or similar HP tractors asking between 3600 to 7000 or so in good running condition. Made me think I got a bit of a deal on mine. I'm not sure about salvage prices, but if you can't make it run before you buy it I wouldn't offer much over $1000, less if it looks like you need to put major work into it. You may be able to get a great deal on a fixer-upper.
Ask questions from whomever is selling it, about how it ran, condition of the hydraulic system, etc. I personally would pull and inspect the spark plugs, make sure that you can rotate the motor by pulling on the fan belt to make sure it is not stuck, check the condition of the tires and wheels. If it has been sitting, then you will have to change the transmission fluid and hydraulic fluids - both take Hy-Tran fluid - most likely there will be water in those fluids due to condensation not a big deal if you change the fluids. the fill plugs for those are behind the seat for the hyrdaulics, and next to the gear shift for the tranny. I'd take those off and see what you can see. Check the oil at the dipstick for antifreeze, same with the radiator for oil. Inspect the engine block for cracks or repairs - especially look around any areas that are very greasy or oily. hope this helps!

Brian
