I've been told that Super MTA's were available from the factory without the TA but were still called Super MTA's. Is this true? Has anyone ever seen one?

The SMTA's without the TA had a round decal without the wing. The TA housing was there so the wheelbase is longer than the Super M. Also, the SMTA was the first Farmall to have an IPTO. It was possible to buy a SMTA without the TA but with an IPTO. So, the SMTA without the TA was more than just a Super M with a different decal.

Many probaly most of IH tractors including MTAs sold in Mississippi Dela did not have TAs up into seventys. TAs were considered too fragile for hired hand drivers.

Maybe one of you can answer this then? If it came without the t/a? can a t/a be put in place of the eliminator shaft system they used? Or do you need to change out the entire tub section with one that accepts a t/a?

my dad farmed with an MTA without the TA in the 60s til 71/2 when it was traded for a 656. he thinks the tractor had one originally but before he bought it, someone "welded the shaft." which was supposedly a common practice in those days. yours could either be field modified or original as the others have said.

As most of the others have said, it is absolutely the truth. Nat2 explains it best. I have seen one or two. The hood emblem will not have the wing on it, only a white circle, but it still reads "MTA". mike

I've never heard of a SMTA without a TA, but I have heard of parts you can put inside instead of the TA so it does not have a TA. Is that what a SMTA is without a TA?

How can it be called a Super M-TA if there is no torque amplifier? TA stands for torque amplifier.

SuperMTA was the model number for the tractor, whether it had a TA or not. Why IH chose this way instead of having two separate models, I cannot say.
The presence of a TA was indicated by a "wing" on the Super MTA circle logo that said "Torque Amplifier." If it had the wing, it had a TA. No wing, no TA.

Andy, some SMTA's were sold with a TA delete. The decal is a little different on those models.
