I posted this on the 8N forum, but I've also got "all red ones" in my shed.. wondered what this side of the fence would have to say. I know a lot of guys play with these old tractors because they use 'em on the farm... but I also know a lot of folks aren't farmers. I grew up on the farm, and still live on the family farm, but I don't "farm" for a living. I became a police officer, specfically, a state trooper, 'cause I like the steady pay check regardless of the weather...My question is, what do you other "non-farmer" types, like me, do for a living, and why do you mess with old iron? I needed a hobby completely away from police work. I saw an old F-20 at a Co. Fair one night on patrol,(23 yrs ago) and remembered my dad had one rotting away down in the pasture, that I played on as a child... restored it, and 30+ more after that of all varieties... ('course, if I knew then what I know now, I never would have started on that sorry pile of scrap! It should have been a "donor")

Tractors, cars, motorcycles, anything with engine. 64 years old, Master electrician, radio and tv technician in good old days. Mechanic with no training, lots of books. Have 54 ford last 30 years, nobody touched it but myself. Do 90% on all five vehicles. Can't stop, but sure slow down! Farmall Cub and A. Just sold Ford 2N. Navy 4 years, aviation electronics technician and Recruiter.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer... Design fixtures, jigs, automated machinery, mold components, etc... Also capable of walking through my office door into the shop and running everything out there from the OD grinder to the CNC lathe. Do some fabrication also...
I also build a couple handfuls of marine performance and roundy round engines a year for spending money...

I grew up on the farm, family operated an agricultural and semi repair shop for a few decades and I spent most of my childhood and teenage years helping out before I headed off to become "book smart".

I have lived in Afton since I was 2 years old, when we moved here from White Bear Lake. My dad owns a small 20 acre micro (hobby) farm. He bought the 340U for clearing snow that I grew up driving when we moved out there. Im now 20, and I bought an F-12 a few years ago and have since rebuilt and repainted it. Just sort of fiddle around with the old tractor. We raised sheep and goats for several years to show in 4-H. Hoping to get some sheep to show in open class at the county fair next year. I am currently going to tech school for an "Agricultural Power and Equipment Tech." degree. Might go on to get an Agri. engineering degree, not sure yet, and I work part time at Mills Fleet Farm in Hudson, WI.

I grew up on a Massachusetts dairy farm, but my career as a college administrator took me far away from New England to the Midwest and then to Texas. I've been here for 38 years and am now retired living on small acreage with 20 or so IH tractors and an assortment of small animals.

Guess I had better throw my 2 cents worth in. My Father was a manager for IHC in western Kansas. They conducted breakdown tests on a lot of the early crawler type equipment pulling gang plows etc. I started working for the local farmers at age 12 driving tractors. Moved to a farm in Ohio and continued making spending money helping the local farmers. Went into the USAF after HS. and never returned to farming until I retired. Thought I would grow vegetables to sell. Turns out it is more like a non profit business. The drought has killed us here in N. Alabama. So, Like a lot of you I don"t raise much around here but dust. like a lot of guys in the 90's, I got into computers (remember Y2K?). Lived around the Minneapolis area for about 8 years. Hated it but liked the steady paycheck. Came to my senses one day, moved back up north, found a new programming job, and bought a hobby farm. I was the first generation of my family not raised on the farm. Guess it's just part of my blood lines to want to raise a little corn and tend livestock.

I'm the High School Band Director here in our small community. On top of the 4 bands I handle, I also teach beginning acting, stage design, direct the winter musical, and teach a course in video production. I'm active in the local Lions Club as well. There were 2 reasons to buy my IH444. It took me 3 hours to mow my 1 acre with a 42' Craftsman rider and a good chunk of the growing season that was 2 to 3 times a week (when it rained), and I needed a lot of landscaping done around the property. Ok... maybe it is overkill, but I grew up on these IH utilities. The family farm was in operation until I was 14, and had the farm stayed active, I probably would have been farming it along with my Dad to this day. I keep my eye out for a chunk of property around 25 acres so that I have more room to play on, with trees, maybe a few acres of open space, etc. This old tractor has provded me with a much needed hobby this summer.

A little more money and a better place to store them, and I might have considered one of the tractor I see on the road for sale around here too - a rusted up M, restored SC, 100, SA.... I've seen a few around =)

I grew up on a dairy farm too, but I always liked the mechanical repair and went to work for the Federal Government in 1951 after finishing school and my brother joined the Air Force since he knew he going to be drafted. I was going to join with him, but my mom didn't want two sons going to war and started bawling. I told she had better come to terms with this since I would probably be drafted. I was drafted later in 1953 and I got married too. I was rehired back with the government at Aberdeen Proving Ground until I retired. I forgot to mention I helped my late dad with morning milking up until the day I was drafted. We tested all those vehicles for the military like the M1A1 Tank, Bradley and M88 Recovery Vehicle to name few. Our daughter was born at Ft Bragg NC. Hal

I'm a gunsmith and have been for 22 years. I grew up helping my grandparents on their dairy farm during the summers and winter vacations. The big tractor on the farm was a super M. I bought a 1941 h which I have gone through because I'm going to plant food plots on a small farm I bought and I will be using the same type of equipment my grandpa made his living with

HI Well I never farmed but did grow up in the country on 22 acres.First tractor I ever drove was a JD - LA they put it in first gear and said drive straight. First tractor I ever really worked with was a 300U did a lot of brush hogging with it. One time drove it almost 20 miles to get home. I still have that one needs much work but is not frozen. My grandfather bought the 300u new.
It was the first one sold in Butler County Pa.
I live in Florida now and have a 530 CaseCk and just bought a 53 superA in Kentucky. I have almost 2 acres here to take care of mostly just mowing. Need at least 1 tractor per acre right.

52 years old, live on the family farm. We have had the old one for over 100 years, and the "new one" since 1937. I farmed hard till about 1996. My dad had a hip replacement and two knee replacements and I had gone through a kidney transplant, so we decided to scale down and let the neighbors farm the place. I have a BS in agriculture from the University of Missouri, FarmHouse Fraternity, very active in FFA in highschool, etc. I am a crop insurance claims supervisor for Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma Farm Bureau. Wife just retired from teaching school. We always had Farmall"s and now that I dont have to farm with them, I just want to keep them in operating order. I did bring a little D-2 CAT back to life about 10 years ago, and pulled an F-14 out of a fencerow 20 years ago and restored. Just Plugging away.

I'm 14 and I have two tractors, a 1943 Farmall H and a 1949 John Deere A. The H Farmall used to be my Grandpa's. My Dad and my Grandpa used to collect and restore old tractors, but my Grandpa died in 1998 and I got his favorite tractor which is my H. I am fixing up the H and the JD A and my two year old brother's 1936 Farmall F-12. When I get my tractors fixed up, I hope to use them in shows, and I would like to farm with them someday. I also hope to do tractor pulling with the JD A when its finished. My Dad and Grandpa used to do farming. I enjoy antique tractors and small engines. I sell, repair, and part out small engines, mostly Briggs & Stratton engines. My Dad has a 1954 Farmall Super M-TA, 1956 Farmall 300(which was also my Grandpa's), a 1933 Farmall F-12, 1944 John Deere B, and a 1941 John Deere B. Me and my Dad fix up tractors and part out a few too.

Andy, its really great to see a young man gaining interest in these old tractors and equipment. You'll find that old tractor guys are well worth listening to, (you just have to weed through some of the bs to get to the worthwhile stuff sometimes), and most are more than willing to share knowledge with someone who'll listen. Pick their brains. Talk to them and seek out their advice. The guys who made a living with this stuff are quickly disappearing and firsthand knowledge is the best stuff. Don't miss an opportunity to learn from the "been there, done that" crowd. thanks for responding.

I'm an insurance inspector, although I now live in a new house on the family farm I grew up on. The farm's been in the family for 104 years.

I farmed the place myself for 8 years, once. Two of the happiest days of my life were the day I started farming and the day I quit.

Grew up on a small grain (450 acres)and cattle (300 acres prairie grass)farm in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Still charish every day of it but went off to become a landscape architect. Helped Dad farm with a Farmall M, two Super C"s, a IH 151 combine and a bunch of other stuff until he quit and sold out in 1973. I am fortunate to have an M to play with in my soon to be retirement.

I'm 35 and I work as a CNC machinist/programmer and mold designer/toolmaker. Or to save my breath, a machinist. Both my parents grew up on farms and my parents are part time farmers on the side. My dad used 20-30 year old equipment when I was growing up so that's what I fell in love with as a kid. Do you guys remember how huge that 50's era tractor seemed when you were ten years old? I always catch myself laughing about that when I cruise around on my tractors. I like old equipment of any form and I like computers and the internet to allow me to talk with others about old equipment!

Kelly, Its been a long time since I did any serious farm work. I really left the farm in 1962 when I graduated from High School even though I farmed my Grandfather"s 135 acres until 1964. I graduated from Purdue (yep, John T Nordhoff and I grew up and went to Purdue at the same time but unfortunately didn"t know each other) in 1966 with a degree in Vo Ag but joined the Army in 1967 after doing a years worth of work on my MS. Joined the Army on 5 July 67 and the rest is history as they say. However, the greatest thing is those old
tractors are still as appealing--if not more--than they were back then. I bought an H when my
Grandfather died in 1960 with a breaking plow, disc, and cultivators and paid it off in a year. In 1960,$1,000 was a FORTUNE for a High School Sophomore!! But wouldn"t trade it! Pop had the Super M, the 1944 M, and a 1952 Ford 8N, and farmed 365 acres in addition to the dairy--40 head in continuous production. Needless to say we were extremely active in the FFA and 4H--what a way to grow up--wouldn"t trade a day of it for anything in the world. A pic of the "fleet" on our place in Tennessee! Have shared this one with a couple of regulars but looking forward to next year when I can finally retire and enjoy them, the family, and friends! Steve

I am a machinist and also assemble automated machines. Have built machines for a major medical company, labeling machines and now packageing machines. Both my grandfathers farmed and I grew up helping the neahbors then after I graduated High school and votech I spent about 5 years as a hired hand for a large farmer running some very nice newer "green" tractors. Meany years ago dad got a 36 F-20 from his dad that he used till one day it through a rod and wreched the block. I looked at that tractor for meany years and even gathered parts to one day fix it up as a young lad with the help of my uncle. well about 20 years later my other grandfather passed and he had been tinkering with an old M and I thought it would be nice to have as a loader tractor so i asked the family and took it home. Found out with the help of this bourd it was a low serial number 39 M so now its time to start restoring, looked and decided it was better to find a nicer f-20 to restore and use ours as a donor so ended up finding a nice very late 39 F-20 that I is done now, hopeing to paint the M yet this fall and 2 weeks ago I found a 39 H that I'll work on next. Also have a very early unique 38 Oliver 80 Row crop.

I grew up on a cotton and corn farm which turned into a dairy farm in south mississippi. still live on the same land, cows are gone now but wife raises purebred Arabian horses. I do my farming now in a greenhouse we do wholesale and retail nursery products. I do have a day job for the steady check and insurance at a major transformer manufacturer. If you look around at the transformers in your area they probably came from our plant as they ship all over the US and world too. I was raised operating a JD A then a B then 620 should i go on the list is endless. Its the memories, that feeling of the old girl being part of you. Only the people that were raised as i was can relate to the old iron in this way. I think my blood is really green.

I've been active duty in the Navy for the past 15 years and plan on retiring. After that, who knows. I'm going to get a tractor because I played with one as a kid on my grandfather's corn farm in PA. I'd like to use it in parades, take it to fairs, and pull hay rides for command family events.

We (my dad mom and extended family) are from northern Indiana. We (collectively) managed 120 tillable and lots of wooded old growth land. Farmalls were it. I am a Technology Education Professor at St Cloud State University, and just love the challenge of old Iron. JimN

Do you make it to any of the local shows? Albany and Nowthen are both pretty decent and fairly close to St. Cloud. I'm over in Milaca and attend both and a few others in the area regularly.

My name is lanse and Im 14 and love old tractors. I am working to get one, but I currentally work on lawn mowers (sort of) and try to sell tham for money (usually I dont do much more then a paint job, oil change, new plugs, and put it out on the main road....) but there are exeptions to that.

Im a vegitarian and member of PETA, and raise chickens and sell the eggs (the chickens are pets, all 40-50 of them). Id like to be an AG mechanic.

All right I will stick my neck out there. My name James and I�m 15. I own a farmall m so I guess that will make me eligible to talk. Ha ha. Personally I don�t have to grow older to know what PETA up to. I run a small chicken business in MO and PETA is kicking and screaming every step of the way, (permit, license. Etc.) Also I think I would die on a vegetarian diet. But I am also ready to fight to death for freedom and that means that people can get together and form groups like PETA. Just so-long as I can form the ANTI-PETA group. I would also encourage you to keep on working on that business being self-employed will give you great character and self-dependence. Anyway have a great day and keep on looking for a tractor.

Lanse you do whatever makes you happy, and I would fight to support your freedom to do that.

I think as you get older you will find that the vegan style of diet is not healthy, we are omnivores and nature intended us to eat meat and veggies. PETA is not what they would have you believe. I hunt, fish, and trap and have farmed and raised cattle and hogs all my life, yet I have built and put up bluebird houses for 30 years, I have managed our farm to bring back the bobwhite quail, I have my own stream team in MO. and do stream cleanup, and I have planted 5,000 trees and installed a cedar tree revtment to prevent streambank erosion along the creek on my place. PETA folks want your money and the political support that it buys, What do they do for wildlife? How many trees do they plant? Hunters and sportmans organizations have poured billions into programs that actually benefit animals. If it weren"t for sportsmen most conservation areas, etc would not exist.

You will learn more as you get older. Just keep your ears and eyes open and watch what various groups really do, not what they say they do. Best wishes, Gene

Gene, a great big AMEN to your reply. If not for the sportman(hunters and fishermen) there would not be all the deer,turkey,elk or anything else that most do gooders think they are protecting. They were wiped out during the depression. Deer were a rare site here until the late 50's when they were restocked. Turkeys only made na come back since the late 80's. In the 90's Elk were brought here from Colorado and other places and we now have the largest herd east of the Mississippi. Here in KY the transplanted Elk herd is thriveing thanks to hunters and fishermen who's license and permit fees are used to protect and stock these animals. Do gooders do not put one nickle in the kitty, but stand in judgement of those who do. I have also bought quail and released to the wilds on my place as well as some others. I have bought many dollars worth of fish and stocked several ponds. I also like messing with old tractors.

My beloved pet sheep are pets. They are lazy, all they think about is food, we wont eat them 2/5 cant reproduce, and we barely get decent wool off them.....Soely pets!!

Not really. (But, I am a great joker.) I am a retired banker from West Florida. I spent summers on a farm in South Carolina and it was equipped with red machines. I now have a little 25 acre hay farm in Hayden, Alabama and am in the process of moving there right now. I use some of my old farmalls for a little real work, but mostly play with them. True confession: I have a 1995 Ford 3930 which does most of the serious work around the place, namely bush-hogging on the steep slopes on the place. mike durhan

Between jobs right now, but for the last twelve years, I've been an administrator of charitable trusts. Kind of an od mix between fundraising and trusteeship.

As for the tractors, I grew up summering on my grandftaher's farm, a Farmall and Oliver kind of place. While working in NYC, we had a weekend place, 40 acres in the Catskills with about 12 of them needing mowing, and the need to scrape snow in the winter. I found an old SuperC that needed an engine rebuild.

Since coming to Maine ther isn't as much mowing (we're on just 2 acres now), but still a need to move snow, so I still do that with a back blade mounted to an aftermarket 3-point.

Since being her, I've taken advantage of the time off to finish up the top-to-bottom restoration of the '47 BN my great-grandfather bought new. It's the tractor that I, my brother, and our cousins learned to drive on. The older of us in that group also have some fond memories of sitting on the left side listening to the old guy rattling off jingles he learned as a kid, as a way of passing the time while out cultivating beans. Our job was to hop off and pick up newfound rocks.

I have been a service manager at a semi trailer repair shop for over twenty years, but have some ground to play with on the side. Also have a show 7 miles away that accepts steel wheels and demonstrations like plowing and such. Grew up on a farm.

Who messes with old tractors? I grew up on a family farm but have worked for a utility for 31 years.My memories of all our old red tractors will stay with me till i die.My little super c is nothing more than a toy for me altho i do mow the ditchbanks out here to make it look nice even tho the touwnship is supposed to mow them.When i find a little job for my tractor to do it is just like taking a mini vacation. So who messes with old tractors u ask? I would answer anyone who enjoys and appreciates the finer things in life.I hope you enjoy your toy as much as i have.

sgt,I am a waste water operator in Harpers-Ferry WV and a Free Will baptist preacher,I live in a small town on 1/8 acre and have 7 tractors.A Farmall Regular and all of the F series and 1 fergurson.

I kinda wondered about you actually...I used to havea Sgt yrs ago, when I was just a young troop, named James Williams.... he got into tractors too, then retired about 15 yrs ago... haven't talked to him since, and when I saw your name on the forum, I half wondered if it was him..ironic you would reply.. and thanks.

Not a farmer yet, but hopefully one day I will get some tillable land and use my old iron wisely. For now I just use my MD for working the ground at camp for sweet corn and for pulling wagons and light work for my friends dairy operation. My regular paycheck comes from a machine shop cause farming is not steady nor wealthy enough for me. 8)

Well can't say I'm not a farmer but what the heck. I do cut and bale hay so that makes me a farmer but I'm retired due to a crime years ago that left me with a bad back. I have most colors of the common brands and at any one time I can have as few as 20 or so and at other times up over 30 of them

well, I may not be able to say I'm not a farmer then either... I put up a few acres of hay each year for my wife's stupid horse... it does give me a reason to play with my tractors and stuff though...but for sure, this horse has not made me one red cent, but has cost me a LOT of DOLLAR bills..hmmm... working for not much profit? Maybe I'm closer to being a farmer than i thought:)

I have had the bug for close to 30 years when I first saw a restored hit and miss engine sitting in a guys barn. I was only 7 or 8 and he fired it up for me.Since then, I have had a bad addiction to old iron.I learned to drive on the M shown, and have its brother in the barn too.(Consecutive numbers)Hopefully this will never happen to anyone, but the next time you go to the hospital, look for an IV bag, chances are I shipped from my warehouse to the place that filled it.Or even better, buy a Butterball turkey, or Jack Links jerkey products, or.... I could go on but too many to list, keep me working!!!!!
