Just don't seem to be able to do it. I have rotated the flywheel all the way around...it is pretty clean...and I have yet to find a line running anywhere. I see the raised vertical bump on the flywheel cover easily enough but no mark on the flywheel. This mark should be (as I look thru the inspection hole) behind the gear teeth on the flat horizontal edge of the wheel, yes?
I see a splash of red paint at one point but no line. Also, I can't seem to tell by looking in the plug hole if the piston is all the way to the top. I could use some tips on this procedure. Apparently this is such a basic concept that they have no pictures in the manual. I'm going back out and put my thumb over the hole and see if I can get it lined up. Any other ideas or hints or tricks would be great. Thanks guys!

Once you feel compression against your thumb drop a large handle screwdriver onto the top of the piston. Big enough handle so you don't lose it.

Have someone slowly hand crank the engine as you watch the screwdriver rise. When it quits rising
you should be at TDC on the compression stoke on No1 piston. There are several ways to verify that. Your rotor whether its a mag or distributor should be at the No1 plug tower. Both valves on No1 piston should be closed too.

I would mark that damper pulley and make a pointer
so you don't need to stand on your head looking for the timing mark on the flywheel. Hal

Find it with compression on that number one. When it blows your finger off the hole take a small piece of wire or whatever you have and put it in on top of piston and you can feel it coming up and starting down. When you find its highest point you have it.

After you get it running go buy yourself a little wire brush and pull the cover off of the bellhousing. While that sucker is spinning you can let the brush ride on the flywheel and it will clean itself.

Be careful and don't let it get your fingers!!!!!
