I have a IH 484 and I put a new connecting rod bearing in it and when I turned the engine by hand to put the new bearing in it stopped and I couldnt budge it. I thought one of the pistons was on a compression stoke so no big deal. I had room to bolt it up and I put it all back together and now the engine is stuck. The crank wont move at all in any direction. Does anyone have a idea on what could cause this?

I suspect you need to tear that engine down. Do not try to start it again until you find the problem. I would think if it had a spun bearing it may need crank work done to it. You may cause more damage by trying to run this without a good inspection of it.

I do not know that engine, but if ti were just starting to suck a sleeve, and the top flange on the sleeve was broken off, the piston rings could have sprung out into the gap and locked it up. if the pan is off, there should be evidence of the lower edge of the sleeve. What caused the rod bearing to be suspect/replaced? What noises was it making? JimN

It has the d-179 diesel 3 cyl engine in it. I bought the tractor from a guy who said the engine was making a noise. I got it home and fired it up and I heard a little knock so I pulled the pan off and seen it spun a bearing. I wanted to start it and see if that was the problem but that was the last time it ran.

If this is a gasoline engine I would pull the sparkplugs to make sure there's no coolant on top of the pistons. If there's no coolant present I would loosen all the bearing caps to see if you can crank it over by hand. Pour some ATF in each cylinder and let it soak. If it still won't turn free I would pull the head to see what the cylinders look like. Hal

Is this a gas or D179 Diesel engine?

Pretty sure the 54 and 74 series were the last offered with a gas engine. I have seen lots of 84 series and not one with a gas engine.
