had '73 1066 motor overhauled last winter and after overhaul it won't crank up unless it gets a shot of ether. before overhaul it would crank without ether when it was warmed up. now you can run it all day and shut it off and try to start it up again and have to give it a shot of ether and then it cranks up. thanks

rockwood: Your 1066 should never need ether, not even first start of the day until temps dip to about 15 or 20 F. I used to start mine at -25F without ether if the block heater was plugged in all night. It hit the 10,000 hour mark before it was 8 years old and was still starting without ether as I suggested above.

My guess is you are a long way from a full engine rebuild.

it was supposed to be a complete overhaul it cost $3000.00. just on engine. but i have noticed the power lever is not in the same position as before. the kill is up from slow about an inch. the guy that rebuilt motor moved it for whatever reason. i was thinking this was the problem. thanks for reply

rockwood: I'm kind of curious what Allan might have to say on the $3,000., and how much of a professional rebuild you get for that. Just ask how much went into his 966 engine. Then we have the Vet who rebuilds them, let him tell you what you might get for $3,000.

The DT-414 engine is quite sophisticated, not like slapping a set of pistons, sleeves, etc. plus making sure the head is in order like the old Farmall gassers. Had you said 3 times that amount of $3,000., it wouldn't have surprised me, and I would have been satisfied you had a complete engine rebuild.

he might have just put rings and sleeves and messed with the head some. the reason for the work on the motor was oil using, not lack of power or missing. the motor ran good before the overhaul but used oil like someone had left the drain plug out. and it hasn't used a drop yet.but now we are splitting it to replace the thrust washers in range trans.truth is it isn't my tractor its a neighbors and i'm just trying to help him out with it.i'm not really sure what he paid the guy to do to the motor but i do thank you for your replies.

Before you do anything check to see that all fuel line conections are tight. Same thing happened to me after I changed filters. forgot to fully tighten the filter drain plugs.

Like the other guys say, only two things will cause that:

Bad compression or a bad injection pump.

the injector pump has been on it for twenty years and probably needs to be rebuilt or a new one. thanks

Do you get smoke out the exhaust while cranking and not starting? If you have no smoke, you're not getting fuel.

If the injection pump head is worn too much and the injector opening pressure was restored to new specs, you may have a situation where the injection pump is not able to develope enough pressure to open the nozzles at cranking speed, but yet will run pretty well once it is started.

the motor was rebuilt last winter it was burning a quart of oil everytime you put out hay. before rebuild it would take a shot to get it going the first time then after it was warmed up it would start without ether. but now you can run it all day then go to crank it and it won't start unless you spray ether to it.it smokes just a little as you crank it with no ether. and after you get it started it will run like it was made to.the guy that rebuilt motor moved the throttle linkage so it kills it about an inch up from slow, it used to kill it on slow and crank 1/2 way over. but now you have to move the throttle all the way over to right on high to crank it. the injector pump has had nothing done to it for twenty years. thanks

What is your definition of overhauled? Reason I ask if new piston/sleeve/ring assemblies were not installed as a set and just rings were installed on old pistons you could have poor compression. If all new parts were installed was the head rebuilt by a good shop? If the valves were set to low in the head you will have lower commpression. Is the injector pump timmed correctally? My 4000 hour 1066 will start down to 20 with out laughing gas as yours should to. If you had a shop do the work I would take it back and have them determine the problem. Any good shop should stand behind their work.

new pistons, rings, sleeves ,bearings, and head reworked all of it was $ 3000.00. but the throttle linkage is off from what it used to be to crank it you have to move throttle to high, as before it would crank 1/2 way over. and the kill is an inch over from slow, before it would kill below slow all the way to leftside.but the injector pump has not had anything done to it for twenty years probably time for a rebuilt or new one. thanks
