A friend of mine has this gear mounted on the belt pulley drive of his IH 300. We were wondering what it was used for. It has the IH logo cast into it.

Hi, It was never intended to be mounted on the pulley drive. All pulleys and sprockets made for that had an open center. It is a peice from another machine and put there for some reason, doesn't look like it was ever used, maybe to give us something to try to figure out.

Yep,

Kinda looks like the internal gear of one of those old John Deere mechanical lifts or something.

Sure doesn't belong on that drive, that's for sure.

I doubt a square chain ran off of the belt pulley drive. I think that would run way too fast for a "flat" chain as we call them here in the west.

Looks a little like the hub for a paper belt pulley with outside missing and pins broke off of the 6 tips. Its not exactly as I remember, and haven't seen one without the outside for years so I may be completly wrong.

Definitely not Electrall, Hugh. Only the largest tractors were fitted with the mid-mount generator. The drive is set up for a C sized V-Belt. Moreover, the axial centerline is parallel with the crankshaft.

There should be a casting number on it. Post that number and someone will look it up.

Just a wild guess here as I don"t know a lot about the implements that were mounted but I would say a mounted corn picker? It looks like it would drive that square hole link chain, but like I said just a wild guess.

Not sure. Though I agree with Dan, it would turn way too fast for use with a "flat chain"
