we are putting new bearings in and I have some questions. can we take out the top end bearings without traking out the crank? and will we be able to remove the crank without splitting the tractor?

Yes. A small tool for the purpose is inserted into the oil gallery hole in the bottom of the main bearing journal. it is usually made from potmetal (zinc alloy) and has a head on it that catches on the bearing insert and rolls it out (opposite of the locating tab on the insert so it just pushes the insert around and out. Is it best ,No but it may be easier than splitting the tractor. JimN

In most cases you can replace the bearings with out taking out the crank shaft, but its not always an easy thing to do or the right way to do it. As far as the crank you have to slip the tractor to remove it and any time you are replacing the bears you should have the crank checked and maybe even turned because of wear
