Are they idot proof my brother lives almost two hours away and hes not very smart when it comes to equipment and I dont want to have too go and work on it every weekend. Thanks for any info.

Try a IH 460 or 560 I use a 1958 560 for the same thing ind it works great for moving 1500 lb round bales. Don't get me wrong a 240 is a good tractor but they aren't built for that.

Jim and Gene are right on. I have a 240. I picked up a cheap homemade counterweight for the 3 point. It was made with a steel frame that held a full 55 gallon drum of cement (about 950-1000 pounds). It was all the 240 could do to lift it. When I had it on there, I was able to lift the front tires off the ground by myself. I only carried that implement once, down to a hole where I used a chain to pull the weight off and leave it in a hole. Now I have a bare frame to put a much smaller weight onto.

I agree with Gene.
It is a bit less than half the tractor needed. A 350 farmall would be the smallest I would consider, and that is marginal. A 400, 450 is better suited. A rear bale spear is far more managable and safe. JimN

They were never designed to pick 1500 lbs thats why you see busted up tractors. If you need to move that kind of wt better spend a bunch of money and get something else. 5-700 l.bs would be the top limit. Now if you want busted spindles hard steering go ahead then we will read about another tractor that upset or rolled over.
