Hi all,
In conversations I have had with some local experts and consulting my Precision Classics Farmall MD I have heard that the original MD's were a pair of 6 volts hooked in series with two boxes, one under the tank the other on the right of the seat.
Other experts say No, no, no...this was the first 12 volt Farmall and it ran a 12 volt battery under the tank.
My question to all is which is right? And if it is a two box setup where in the world do you get the box beside the seat? Whats it gonna cost!?!

Thanks in advance,
Scott

I think I will restore mine with two boxes if I can ever find the one beside the seat. For one thing it gets people talking and it looks really neat. I may make it a dummy box and only run one 12 v but dont tell

The '50 MD I have just has 1 battery under the tank. I'm not saying there was none under the seat at one time, but it looks as if there was never any there. I don't think it had 2. Doug N

The MD had two 6 volt batteries connected in series to make a 12 volt system. One was under the tank like the regular M, the other was on RH side of the seat support. When I was growing up on the farm, that is the way the MD we had was set up. I think it was around a 1950 model. Later models may have had a different setup. I think the battery box beside the seat was a little different than the one under the tank, but not sure. I believe you can take a regular M box of the under the tank variety and modify it to fit beside the seat. I think the only difference would the the hold down system for the box.

my 1950 md has 1 battery under the seat. i was told it was an option, but they first came out with the 2 sixes hooked together to make 12 v. I don't know if my 1950 came with 2 batterys or not. but it is sure nice having it under the seat. jonnny2006.....it has power steer and the m@w 9 speed that enters thru the side of the tranny in front of the brake pedels. i know older ones had a cable thru the top. I'm still waiting on my roof to get put on my quansit, so i can fix a gear in the front of the engine, As the mag isent getting power from the front of the engine. The constant rain is keeping crews from putting on my roof.

Yes on two 6 volt in two boxes. There was two different box part numbers that went beside the seat with some differences mainly in the mounting if I remember correct. One 12 volt battery started being used on the SMD when battery started being located dirrectly below seat. Haven't saw a NOS battery box for one in several years, don't know of any exact box being reproduced.

Anything is posable on IH tractors, so you could be right about your tractor. But I have a lot of information and pictures that I could post about MD and stage one SMD that shows the standard IH way was 2 battery boxes and 2 6 volt batterys wired in series to make 12 volt system. I suspect a lot of the battery boxes beside seat got eliminated early in the tractors live because the boxes were in the way.
