I just purchased a 1953 super h and had a few questions. There is a 12 v battery neg ground in the tractor now. The voltage regulator is missing and the generator is disconnected. Was the super h 12v neg ground or was it 6 volt pos ground? Id like to put it back the way it belongs. The tractor starts and runs fine. I would think if this tractor was pos ground, wouldnt the starter run backwards?

Punch the link below for a wiring diagram for the Super H.

As the others mention the SH was 6 volt positive ground from the factory. And the starter is polarity insensitive - it'll spin the right direction grounded either polarity.

your generator can be rebuilt, mine run about 80-90 dollars from a local shop to rebuild them. i found it better to have the shop get the voltage regulator. most places sell electrical stuff as non returnable. i have 2 brand new reg's sitting on the shelf that are no good. the wiring harness are available also for your tractor. pretty sure your regulator mounts up by the steering post.

All SHs were six volt positive ground. As below, the starter will go correctly with eather polarity.
there are good reasons for leaving it 6volt. and good reasons for going with an alternator, or 12v generator. Bob M diagrams show the wiring and John T has provided trouble shooting step by step. Use the archives(search for)for your initial research, and then ask us questions as they come up. JimN

When new it would have been 6 volt + ground.

Chris, The IHC guys will have to tell ya what voltage she was originally, I can only offer that the starter will still turn the same direction REGARDLESS of Polarity.
