I have 706 gas tractor. I have received a lot or reponses on previous messages to use low ash oil (30w in summer & 10w in winter). Went to the Case dealer to get the low ash oil & he said that all they had was 30w & that they did NOT make 10w low ash oil. Can I run 30w in tractor year around? If not, where can I find low ash 10w?

In my humble opinion. The best oil that I can find these days is Shell Rotella synthetic 5W-40. It is a heavy duty motor oil intended for diesel engines but can also be used in gas engines. It has a API rating of CL-4 or Cl-4 plus. It has a higher detergent package than many standard motor oils and it has a better wear package than standard automobile motor oils. The key ingredient for the wear package is ZDDP which is being phased out of automobile motor oils for emissions reasons but is critical in older engines for valve wear and general overall design. Also critical is the oils ability to control the Ph in the oil. A good motor oil will do this better than most. 5W will give you flow at low temperatures and at start up (the most critical time to have flowability). The 40W will give you the viscosity you need at operating temperature with an engine that has larger clearances. The ZDDP and the flowability make this motor oil a clear winner in my humble opinion. Most motor oils are coming from the same source, it is the wear and oxidation/detergent packages that are added to them that make them perform. JMHO, Terry

If you're using a block heater you can stick with the 30w. The lower viscosity oil makes cold starting easier, but the block heater takes care of that. What part of Wonderful Wyoming are you in?

Case-IH 10w Low-Ash does exist, at least as of last year. Funny thing is, I could not find it on their website. I'll see if we still have a pail at the farm and post back with the part number, but it probably won't be till Monday. I don't think I'd run 30w in winter, just try to pour it on a 0 degree day, and you'll be convinced not to run it.

I would appreciate it you could get the part #. If not I will do some research & look for another low ash oil in the 10w. Thanks

Don't know where your at but here in N.E. Ohio we run the 30W year round with no problems and the 706 gets run everyday , and it sets on the barn floor year round we have no starting problems at anytime as long as ya have a good battery and the engine is in tune. In winter weather it gets extra warm up time before use like 10-15 min. Been running a 706 gasser since 1980 so i sorta know all the quarks with them .

I live in WY where it can get pretty cold with the wind chill. The tractor is stored in barn & has a block heater. I use it about once or twice a week to move snow & drop a big bale. Will 30w still work in wintertime?

Whether you get your oil from CNH or elsewhere, what you are looking for is an oil with an ash content of 1/2 percent or less. These oils are usually sold for LP engines.

CIH has the 10W low ash oil. I bought a pail last fall from my local dealer. Your dealer might have to order it for you. Be prepared as its spendy, I think I paid $65 for a 5 gallon pail.
