Hello, can anyone tell me what size is the hex bolt is for taking off the blades. I'm not sure they are meant to be hex.

Thanks,

Steve in Ohio

An impact wrench makes life so much easier.

Yup! A good impact wrench will take those Woods blade off in no time. No need for a wood block, wrench of pipe to hold the blade either. That special wrench that Woods supplies with the mowers to hold the spindle for blade removal is useless!! I think it was designed by the lawyers.

your deck must raise higher than mine to get an impact under there.

I always take the deck off the tractor before I work on the blades. Too unpleasant to lay on the floor and try to work under that thing.

I use a peice of pipe that will slide over the blades and another one for a cheater pipe on a breaker bar to remove the bolts. it is easier than trying to use that special wrench on the pulley. look at the cutting edge and see which way it would turn to cut the grass, that will tell you which thread the bolts are.

Steve, I have a Woods 59 mower that I took off my Farmall A. It is a little rusty, but worked when I took it off last fall. You can have it if you want to come get it. I am south of Indy

I have an L59 deck and the bolts are left hand thread and are either 15/16 or 7/8, not sure right now. They can be a bear to take off sometimes though. Woods sells a special tool to hold the pulley still or I have used a large dia pipe smashed partly flat on the end so it slips over the end of the dull blade to hold it still. I have also used a block of wood between the blade and the deck on the front side to hold the blade still. I just tighten the bolts snug enough so the balde doesn"t slip when reattaching so it isn"t as hard to get them off the next time.

As Ed says, if it's a left hand mower, the bolts are left hand thread. Also these bolts are special and I think they may have special threads, so don't try to replace them with regular bolts.

They are 5/8 hex head bolts. If it's a left hand mower (Throws the grass out the left side and the blades turn counter-clockwise when viewed from above) they are left hand thread. It should take a 15/16 wrench.
