I'm looking for a cheaper source for a new 6v battery. I found one 560 cranking amps. Is that about right? Too much, too little?

I'm not sure if it's a Group 1 or not, so I'll call and ask, but first I want to know what I should be looking for in cranking amps for a 6v battery.

hmmm. I never thought of that. Thanks for the tip. I'll look into that as well.

Although I don't know how little my tractor is going to be used. My kids already want me to drive them all over the neighborhood on a daily basis. third party image

I have bought 3 or 4 of the ones Rusty mentioned the past few years. They last a long time in a Super A or C type tractor, less time in an H, which is harder to turn over. More important than the battery is the charger. You WILL need a charger for a little used tractor such as yours. It's not particularly safe to jump them from your 12 volt car or truck, I prefer not to. A decent charger is more important than the battery. A power pack would be a good substitute, don't know if they come in 6 volt, though.

Closest TSC is hours away.
I'm just gonna have to start calling around. What other places might carry them other than auto parts stores?

Grab the yellow pages. Start searching for any store that caters to farmers, hobby farmers, horse owners, etc. It does not have to be an Orscheln's or TSC. Depending on the area of the U.S. you or anybody else is in, there will be a very similar store. It will just have a totally different name.

A battery never gets any better but slowly loses it"s power. A low amp battery may work for a short time but as it gets weaker it may not be enough to start an H. Get the highest amp group 1 and it will last longer and be cheaper in the long run.

Mike, I just bought a new 6 volt for an H less than 2 hours ago. It is a group size 1, 770 cranking amps at 32 degrees F, 625 CCA at 0 degrees. Price was $45.

Orscheln's Farm and Home. I doubt if you have any of those stores out where you live, but they handle pretty much the same brands of stuff as a TSC, and there are several other franchises that are also very similar.

For what it's worth, I priced the same battery at my local NAPA store. The NAPA store had it priced at $65, but theirs was a heavy duty rated battery. They no longer sell the less expensive version.

Did you ask them(Walmart) to get you one? Here they will order whatever you want if it is not in stock. Course we are in the end of the state and the closest big cities are Chattanooga 80 miles, Atlanta 120 miles Asheville 120 Charlotte 140 etc. so they are somewhat more amenable.

I sure did. They said they couldn't get anything 6v.
I suppose I could ask again when someone else is working.

Mike - I recently purchased two fresh "Energizer" brand group 1, 540 cranking amp batteries at Sam's Club for $32 each.

My son reports Tractor Supply has 'em also, though for a few bucks more.

Regarding cranking amp ratings, "more is better". Too few cranking amps will cause you problems. More than is required however is fine and in fact is desired.

I'll have to check Costco. We don't have Sams in the local area.
