Just overhauled the A engine and it ran just fine. Now we have a knocking noise from the engine. Took the oil pan off and the rod and maim bearings look ok. We suspect the carb. or Mag to be the problem. All help is appreciated.

what you do is take out all spark plugs and buy a extendable magnet the size of a pen. thant should get thew object out.

You more than likely have a piece of metal on the top of a piston. Tramp material gets into the intake manifold, or the head when being overhauled then it just sits there until later when all seems to good to be true. I would look into the plug holes with a small flex light (if flat pistons it works great) or pull the head. Neither of the two parts mentioned will make it knock. Sorry, but not all is lost, just pulling the head is not that much. JimN

I am by no means an expert... but my 444 needed the valves adjusted. Made all kinds of noise when it ran, and I was worried that it was going to be something big. Pulled off the valve cover and found 2 valves way out of spec. Checked and adjusted them all, and now she purrs like a kitten. Can't remember where I read it, but either my IH manual or the IT manual said to check and adjust the valves after XX hours during break in, which is what you are doing now.

Hope this helps

I'm not clear on how the carb or mag could be the cause of a knock in the engine.

Did the rebuild include pistons, wrist pins and wrist pin bushings?

Yes it included all the above. We are thinking there could be an engine knock caused by wrong timing or fuel problem.
