Can anyone show me pictures of what the underside of an H tank is supposed to look like? I was eyeballing the attaching hardware yesterday and noticed that it has 3 different nuts, one with a cotter pin. Plus the two bolts on the front have a tall (10 or so) stack of washers with one spring full compressed and the other about half way. It looks like a rigged job to make it work.
What is it supposed to look like under there? Any pics or a proper set up out of the factory that I should shoot for?

GA Dave said: Not too sure of the underside But as K-Mo said go to www.caseih.com and search H. Get you a three ring binder and print out everything for your model. Pay attention to the serial numbers. You'll have part numbers and exploded views of all the major sections.

Hey, that's really handy! Thanks a bunch!

There are supposed to be three nuts with the cotter pins, all the same, and likewise all 3 springs are identical. Someone has used flat washers as spacers because either the stud would not screw into the tank far enough, or the nut would not go onto the stud quite far enough. Originally there would have been NO washers.

hmm,, Maybe I can go strip the '39 at the junk yard.

Did M's use the same sized attaching hardware? Just in case the junkyard doesn't want to part the hardware from the tank.

Mike, I'm not sure if the hardware is the same on an H as on an M, I'll have to check on that. Those slotted nuts are called "castellated nuts" or more commonly referred to as "castle" nuts, and should be readily available at just about any hardware or automotive store. You might even find the springs you need at a GOOD hardware store.

One other thing, the nut is supposed to come off of the stud, with the stud remaining in the tank, but more often than not the entire stud/nut,spring assembly will unscrew right out of the tank. Don't worry about it. You can clean it up and re-install just the way it came out, or work it over, get the nut to seperate from the stud, clean it all up and install the correct way. As long as you get some compression on the spring, your tractor won't really care one or the other.

Mike, I just checked with the H parts manual, and the M parts manual. The fuel tank mounting stud is part number 51122DA for both tractors, and I also found out that there is indeed one flat washer used. The washer fits between the spring and the castle nut.

Many thanks. I'll give it a go soon. Maybe tonight after SWMBO (She who must be obeyed) says I can go work.

Mike,

Go to www.caseih.com and follow "Search for Parts". You will find a parts breakdown to show the attaching hardware.
The stud mounts use rubber washers about 3/8" thick.
