Well I had to do some work on the M since the ignition toggle switch went bad. I opened up the box for the ammeter and light switch, and found it full of old wasp nests and spiderwebs. It has a newer ammeter in it and somehow during cleaning a wire came off and I don't know where it was connected to. I have a pic posted in the Stuck and troubled forum, I'll try to post it here. Can anyone tell me where the black wire off the top of this meter goes too? It doesn't match up with the wiring diagrams. (12V)

I should have given a better indication of the wire, it's the black one on the far left. Also does the coiled wire (resistor?) in the bottom center need to be replaced? I could'nt tell if it had some kind of white coating or if it was corrosion.

I'm not certain but is that black wire a ground for the ammeter illumination light lampholder? (Is it connected to the lampholder shell??)

If so, and if the illumination light burns when you turn on the headlights just tape the wire off - it needs not be connected anywhere. Otherwise ground the wire somewhere inside the ammeter box.

Now if that wire is NOT a lampholder ground, post back what it's connected to....

That coil at the bottom of the light switch is the headlight dimming coil. The white stuff coating it is probably asbestos(!) insulation. My advice is simply leave it alone. Just make sure no wiring touches the coil when the box cover is in place, as the coil gets quite hot when the headlights are operated in the "dim" position.

DUH!! Thanks Bob. I guess that bulb has been burned out ever since I've had the tractor, never knew the gauge was lighted! LOL! I'm guess I won't worry about the dimming coil either since on the rare occaisions when I use the lights I always have them on bright.

I can't quite make out the individual wires in your photo, but Bob Melville has bailed me out a number of times.

Here is a link to the wiring diagrams that he has so generously made available on-line.
