I just got hold of a DT 466 out of a truck. I have a M, H, and a 460 sitting around. I have heard that the bell housing are too small for a 466 to fit in the 460 or the H. Will it bolt up to the M? What back plate do I need to use? clutch, flywheel? etc Can I just extend the frame rails? Let me know anything you have. Thanks, Josh

Best would be to put it in the M. The H has an 18 inch wide frame and the 460, although it has the 20 wide frame, narrows down to fit the same clutch housing bolt patern as the H. The M has the 20 inch frame width that was carried over to the 706 and larger tractors. Use the back plate from a tractor that has the 400 series engine. If you use the truck engine front plate just use the M frames. If you switch to a tractor front cover using the later frames will be easier.

I don't know about the flywheel. 400 series flywheels were available with both a 12 inch (same size as a super M) or a 14 inch clutch. How the OD will fit in the clutch housing or what it will take for a starter someone else will probably know.

Hi Owen,

Sure hate to argue with ya 'cause you're a pretty knowledgeable sort, but the M width was carried over into the small frame tractors (560, 656, 666, 686) and the 706 came in as the first of the newer "big tractors". Having never owned a 706, I really hate to comment on that particular beast, but any other large frame I've ever been around has a frame width of 22". Now, while all this is going on, there is still the question of the "inside frame/outside frame" thing and how they are mounted, but I'd still just bet that the M is far too narrow by 2" for that 466 engine/plate. Dunno,

Allan

Allen, you are correct that the 460, 560, 656, ect. do have the same width frame rails as an M, but what Owen was getting at was the clutch housing width. 460, 544, 656, 666, and 686 have a 10 1/2" clutch, while M, 400, 560, ect. have a 12" clutch. The frame rails bolt to the sides of the 460-686 size clutch housing, while on the M-560, they bolt to the front of the clutch housing. 706-1456 have the same width frame as the M, while 766-5488 are a couple inches wider. I always used to assume that 656-686 had the same clutch as 560, but I guess the smaller clutch on the newer tractors was IH's attempt to cheapen production costs.
