Hello. I've been a longtime viewer but this will be my first post in a long time. (Since 1999-2000)

Just got this 53 Super M. First tractor I've ever bought and loaded under its own power. Has live hydraulics and a two-way valve, and a faux belly pump--that last bit threw me off for awhile, but it's all factory. The hydraulics picked up a New Holland hay conditioner easily. Transmission is nice and quiet, and the engine runs pretty well but could benefit from tuneup.
Right off the bat I have to contend with a wobbly front end, though I tightened that up quite a bit by rotating the big gear and tightening the loose castellated nut in the steering gear housing. At least now I can go down the road and not be thrown off the tractor. A rebuild for the front-end is probably in order.

Doesn't charge, but I suspect that's more a wiring issue than anything else. The real problem is the rears are loaded and that I will have to contend with down the line.

No real questions here, just giving a sort of introduction.

I did take the time to check out the entire front when I flipped the gear around. The bearing behind the nut is tight, no slop. I didn't check the wheel bearings up in the air, but they both seem tight. The u-joint is snug. Without a doubt the upper bolster bushing is wore. I could see the gear move back and forth when I turned the steering shaft with vice grips.

Anyhoo, I've only managed one really good look over of the SM. My next day off, I'll be doing a little disassembly and try to get it charging.

Bob, I'm not going anywhere this weekend. Got work to do and steel to make.

As an addendum to this Super M adventure, I just picked another '53 SM that was a restoration not finished/barely started. Same stuff as mine except somewhat tore down. Bought it sight unseen. I'll save that project for a rainy day.

Finally got to put the Super M to work just the other day. Did a little tune-up on it (plugs and wires), adjusted the valves (one was tight, no clearance), got it charging (new regulator), and changed the engine oil.

My buddy had me hook up to a 35' trailer to haul big round bales. Made 3 trips, 5 bales first two times, 4 bales the last time. The Super M didn't miss a beat. My friend following me with a JD4010 gasser was just keeping up. He was quite impressed with my tractor, and so am I. Of course, he ran circles around me with the 966.

Only issue I had was the tractor started smoking during the 2nd trip. When I returned, I saw the oil cup had come loose. It didn't fall off, but hung up on the choke rod.

Are Rockford clutches particularly grabby? It's hard to engage it smoothly. I don't see any oil leaks around the clutch. In fact the only leaks this tractor has all center on the hydraulic system.

Still have a few details to address, but all in all, a very nice tractor.

I'm new too, and I have a '53 super M also. Have the same problems with front wheel wobble and charging problems. Mounted the front tires on the outside of the hubs instead of inside and this helped somewhat. Replaced rear rims and got tires the next size wider for greater traction and added weight. Only have air in the tires now.

I don't know the meaning of "faux". It appears to be a Stage 2, which means live hydraulics and battery under the seat, among other things. The cover for the hole where the belly pump was is used for rods that curve up for the hydraulic cylinders for rear mounted implements, so there is no "faux" belly pump, the cavity is empty, PROVIDED you have a factory Stage 2.

All I meant was it only "looked" like a belly pump was there and I was wondering why the SM would have one instead of a cover. Once I got to looking through the IPL, I saw a cover that was the shape of a belly pump. But you're right, there is nothing behind it. It did throw me for a little while, though.

Sounds like you have a good one! I have a late '52 SM, and like it a lot.

Before you go to the trouble of a complete rebuild of the front bolster, check three places for wear that may be part of the front wheel wobble. 1) That little bearing behind the castellated nut is easy to replace and often badly worn. It can allow a lot of wobble. 2) Bad front wheel bearings can cause the shakes, also. Run one front tire at a time up on a block of wood and shake the other one to check for wear. 3) Check the universal joint just above the front of the gas tank. It's another prime suspect, and easy to change.

I'll echo what some others have already told you, be careful if you start messing with those loaded rear tires. Also be advised that removing the water and CaCl from the rears will raise the center of gravity, allowing the tractor to tip more easily.

Good find! You going to Elnora , IN this weekend? Might be a haul from up north, but might also be worth the trip as the parts are cheap there. I will be there with an H and a model A pick up trailer and may take my little genius plow.

Yep, that's my '46 H. Fellow brought it to my friend's shop and wanted it running so he could sell it at auction. I asked him what he wanted for it outright and I gave him $800. Right away, it needed a new manifold and a lot of tinkering.

Eventually, I want to empty the ballast from the rears. But for now, I'll leave it be.
This isn't my first tractor BTW. I have a Cub that's been in the family for 25 years, give or take, that I got running in 1998. Picked up a POS straight M Jan 2006 and redid the engine. (Now the tranny needs new bearings.) Got an H shortly after that (in which I recently replaced 4th/5th slider) and then a B at an auction this spring.
Right now, I'll start gathering the odd little parts that it needs. This will be one tractor that I want to paint. I am glad that the rear tires are pretty nice. At worst, I'll need new rims.

Sounds like you have a plan, Chris! We'll be watchin' for reports on your progress.

Just be careful around those loaded tires! They can weigh as much as some whole tractors. Small tractors, yes, but heavy and potentially dangerous without the right rigging to handle them.

Welcome, these are great guys, as good as the tractors they have. I'm Lanse, I'm 14 and looking around here for my first tractor, but havent found any. There are a pair of John Deere combines here, I'd inquire about them if I knew a thing about combines!!!

I do, but that was sort of a present from my parents. Its mine, but unlike my mowers, I dont have a sort of connection to it because I worked to get it. I have sevral hundred dollars in ine of them, all came from me.....
