About a month ago, I put my newly restored narrow front Farmall H in a local parade. When the parade was done, I had to drive it back to my grandmas house, so I put it in road gear and went the 1/4 mile or so to her house. When I got about half way there, I noticed the front wheels were wobbling really bad. I shifted the tractor down to forth and go it to the house. I took one of the hub caps off and took the outside bearing out. Well it came out in a dozen or so pieces. So I replaced the inside and outside bearings on that side, and just repacked the ones on the other side since they were still good. When I took it for a test drive the wheels still wobbled really badly in road gear, but are fine in fourth gear. What is wrong? I know it isnt the worm gear steering thing because the tires dont wobble together. I want to resell the tractor, so I want it to be fixed properly. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My 350 wobbled just like that when I got it.My grandad grew up and farmed with H's all his life.We checked the wheel bearings and all they neede was tightened up.Then we dropped the front bolster shaft out and put in new bushings and bearings. The other thing was turning over the gear on top of the shaft.Runs down the road like a dream(just can't stop too good though, brakes need redone.)

If the bearing came out in pieces, there could be spindle wear that allows the inner race to be loose on the shaft. OR The outer hub can be wallowed out, again excess play. Centering the wheel as noted in the other post is important. Finding all the lost motion in the gears shafts anf U joints is also a huge factor. A not permanent solution is to run one tire 5psi underinflated. JimN

my 43 H wobbels so bad in 5th that when i go to bed at night my arms are still shaking!! Mines is in the worm gear, cause everything else is good. when i greased the front it wobbled way worse as now it was lubed good. I would fix it but i only use the tractor for mowing the yard. I like to mow in 1st or 2nd as it gives the best cut at that speed. I also used to haul wagons for the neighbor with his M and it was 4 miles to the silo and i remember the wheels wobbling so bad that my hands hurt. The most common problume that i have had and that i.h. guys tell me... the worm gear gets worn bad in one spot, thus the wobbling. my 43 H will only wobble if it is in the bad spot. so if im on gravel and there is a good grade on the road i have to keep the wheel just left enough to get me into a good spot on the gear.

Drive one tire up on a board so the other is off the ground, and spin the free tire and see what it does, then do the same with the other side. Also check the spacing from the rim to the wheel center and make sure they are even all the way around. A bent rim can act things up and a rim that isn"t centered will cause up and down bounce. There are other parts like the bolster that can mess things up too, but I haven"t had experiance there yet, maybe someone who has can fill us in there.
