When I bought out my father in laws dairy farm 3 years ago. His newest tractors were built in 1959. All JD 2 cyl. Since then I've upgraded to more modern tractors but actually nothing newer than 1969. It's hard to farm now without dual hydraulics, 3-point, 1000 rpm pto, and diesel engines.

All right I trolled until I got the bite. Riverbend, Please let me know if I am being too nosey. How big is the area you truck farm? also what do you grow? I grew up as a farm kid and still have it in my blood. I am thinking about doing a truck garden when I have enough retirement. Ron

I have a 1940 H and a '53 CS that I use to make my living truck farming. Mary does have an off farm job, but that does not bother me. Not too many working class folks can afford to have one income no matter what they do. Besides, she won't do what I tell her anyway...

If you inherited about 160 acres of good tillable land, and the wife has a good job in town, with health insurance for you, then yes, you can make a living with old iron.

We farm exclusively with old Farmalls. We did recently get a SMTA but everything else is SM and older.

However we do not make our living with them. Most small farm operations require off the farm income to survive. Those that don't have outside income live frugally.

I quit farming in 1996, still have my tractors. 1959 460D, 1967 706D, and 1968 756D. I did have and still have a 1980 605F Vemeer round baler.

I would think maybe 1964 or even '74 might be practical. In '54 there wasn't enough selection of bigger tractors and equipment with enough Hp and options to be economical today. You still need to have a decent parts availibilty.

John parts are still available for most of the letter series Farmalls from one end to the other. Castings are not, but everything else is. Can do lots of work with an M or even H and SC. This is how folks use to do it and some of us still do.

My tractors consist of a Super A, Super C, and Super H. Just got an Allis G to use from my Uncle too. I run beef cows, goats, ducks, and a few acres of strawberries, asparagus, and other truck farm produce. The only new piece of equipment I use is a NH 273 bailer and that is around 30 yrs old. It can be done. It's a lot easier than you think to make a living farming when the banker doesn't take most of your income every month so you can have shiney paint pulling the disks. Mike

my dad uses all old machinery (30 yrs old and older) the newest tractor he has is a 706 diesel with an IH quick tach loader. otherwise the next newer tractor is the JD 70 Diesel. he combines with an old JD 30 combine. Bales with a 24T JD baler. Cuts hay with a NH 489. just all of his equipment is old so he takes it slow with it
. not exactly the answer you are looking for but it's close

I would if I could... I guess Dad's farm makes do with every major implement 1984 and older...

I prefer to run the older stuff - cabs and AC are OK now and then, but nothing beats the sound of an old Farmall under load! third party image

Not right now, but I have for many years in the past. It isn't a big deal and can be done. I do use my old ones more than the 666 or 584. My 1953 Super C gets more use than any other I have. I also use my 48 and 50 M quite a bit. I just like running them. I have lots of implements to fit them and could do it again if need be. I have a neighbor that farms with a 1945 A and a 47 H. He only raises a few acres of tobacco and has about 20 cows, but that is how he makes his living.
