Farmall B - Whatzat noise?

Just what the youngest asked me today. Still idles kinda rough, still mystified over why I have all but the lower two clicks on the throttle when I was missing half the range before. Still waiting out my week and it sounded REAL sweet this afternoon as my daughter drove it round and round the yard giving it the daily workout. Nice deep sound for such a small tractor.

My youngest asked today about a funny noise that I never noticed before. Pretty certain it is a gear noise in the rear end. It comes and goes but is constant as the tractor goes down hill. Imagine you down shifted your car and then make the noise louder and stronger (like bigger gears maybe) and you will have the noise. Normal? Maybe I need to check out the transmission fluid?
I wouldn't mention it except the durned kid had to point it out and now it interferes with me listening to that pretty rumble from the front end!

I had a JD 720 which did the same thing, and the sound was BAADDD, I knew some thing was wrong so I came to find out the shifter was bent, and the shift forks weren't aligned correctly,... for what it's worth, good luck.

Do check the rear gear oil for water and glop. Replace as needed. Most of them make some whine on the coast side of the ring& pinion. Run it if the oil is good. JimN

M'self, I lose the rumble and listen to the howl of the fan. ;8^) I remember on Grandpa's farm, that's what you heard from the house was the fan, not the exhaust.

My guess is that it's just wear on the gear that you were in. If the tractor spent a lot of time cultivating, for instance, in 2nd, that gear is worn more than first or third and will be noisier, especially on the coast side. No harm, there's in all likelihood plenty of tooth left on the gear, just it will be noisier than the others. It's just the gear that it got worked on the most.

I wouldn't worry. Chalk it up to the tractor5's personality.
