Can't get timing right

Got my H running this morning, on just 2 & 3, 1 and 4 no go.

#1 cylinder at TDC, rotor is at #1 terminal. Wired distributor starting there to #1, then inboard to #2, back to #4, outboard to #3.

Spark and compression good to all. Is there a chance no fuel to just two cylinders? Manifold looks ok.

Also, coil was getting hot. Read some through the archives, switched polarity, seems better.

Need some input please.

Brian

You need your plug wires in this firing order as the rotor turns CW. Hal

2-1
4-3

Red - Sounds like you've got a pair of plug wires (#1 and #4) reversed. Correct distributor plug connections work clockwise around the cap in this order: 1-3-4-2.

#1 is usually marked on the cap. However if the distributor or distributor timing gears are installed wrong, #1 may not be where it's marked. If this is suspected, set the crankshaft so #1 is at TDC compression then note the position of the rotor under the distributor cap. Whatever terminal it points to will be #1 for your tractor. Then simply reconnect the other plug wires in the 1-3-4-2 sequence as above.

Incidentally it's highly unlikely fuel is not getting to #1 and #4 cylinders!

Swapping coil polarity should have no effect on coil heating. (It'll work fine either way...). Rather coil heating is usually the result of a 6 volt coil on a tractor that's been converted to 12 volts without the addition of a voltage dropping ballast resistor.

My tractor now runs perfectly! You should see my grin. Thanks Old, thanks Bob.

12 volt or 6 volt?? 6 colt coil and maybe no ballast resister, which will make it hotter then it should be since they do get warm. As far as which side of the coil should be where if its + ground + goes to the distubutor if - ground - to distubutor. I would also try this. Switch #1 and #4 plug wire placement on the cap and see if it then fires on 1 and 4 is so then you had TDC on the exhaust stroke which would make them 180 out

Switching 1 & 4 did it.

I live right in the city and I've been driving up and down my street. A great day.

Thanks

Had a feeling you were going to say that. If that is the case, can I run it like that, or do I have to go back inside?

12V with 12V coil. That's right now.

Heading outside to try that now.

Thanks, Brian

If its a true 12 volt coil it will say on the out side of it not resister needed. If its a 6 volt coil made for 12 volts it will say external resister needed. Yep what you did was got it on TDC on the exhaust stroke instead of compression and that will throw you off 180. Don't feel bad most of us have BTDT at some point in time
