Went back for another look, I believe it has a turbo on it. Was that stock on those. Also has a straight pipe with no muffler. Is that also normal? I need to find the aluminum or ? part around the shifter levers, what would be a good source? Also missing one piece of sheet metal from the side so wondering if there is a yard that might have these. Last question is how you move the rear wheels? Looks they have not been for some time. They don't look like the old 2 piece wedges like my SMTA.

thanks for any help, will need to get books on it.

I don't know how similar these are to JD, having never been a JD person. I think maybe I've heard of wrapping the axle on the end to get the second wedge loose, but never seen it done. I traded my 986 in seven years ago so it's been awhile. It always had the special clamp tool with it though, so I never restorted to other than standard proceedure to get the wheels moved.

As Larry said you usually need a special clamp to get the second wedge loose. Unless you get lucky and the outside wedge comes loose first and you can screw the bolt out of the inside wedge. Then you can use a big punch and a big hammer (old axle and maul) to knock the inside wedge loose, just be careful no to damage the threads. But if the inside wedge comes loose first you need the special clamp. Have seen quite a few 856"s with add on turbos that ran a long time with no problems. Horsepower would depend on what turbo it is and where the fuel is set, but factory HP is around 100. Lee

Turbo, straight pipe, and missing tin means it was abused. I would walk away, as fast as my legs would take me, from this deal.

Nat,

The A&W aftermarket turbos came configured with a chrome straight pipe. They worked just fine year in and year out.

Don't think SMTA had wedges. Stock wheels on SMTA would have been the clamp type.
Wedge lock wheels became available as an option on later tractors like the 856. If you have the wedge lock wheel, there was a special tool that was on one wheel or the other when the tractor was new. It had to be on the wheel for busting the second of 2 wedges. The center bolt in the wedge is designed to push the wedges apart. If the wheels have not been moved for a while, this could be a tough task. Otherwise it is a 12 point 7/8 inch socket that fits the wedge bolt.
These things need to be tightened several times after moving the wheel too. Run it a bit and recheck the torque. Then recheck several times after using the tractor.

Yep you are right, my SMtA has clamps, not wedges. Not sure what I was thinking. They actually are not that hard to move even when left in one place a bit. I am not familiar with the wedge set up on IH, guess I will be because I think I am going to have to move the wheels to haul it. I Used to work with JD wedge wheels and assume they are similar. With the JD wedges you could tighten the bolt you mentioned and then hit the end of the axle with a really big hammer and they would sometimes come loose. Are these similar to the deere design? Thanks for the help. Also I was told this tractor would run about 100.5 HP, what would it run with turbo or does that depend on what else was done?

Turbo was an add on not stock on a 856.

Without a turbo the straight pipe would be deafening. So mufflers not straight pipes were stock also.

Colfax slavage might have the parts you need here in Iowa. There may be one closer to you.
Where are you located?
