350 U wheel stuck

I am a Cat guy and have little knowlege of wheel tractors. I need a tractor to use for grading and a IH 350 U was recommended. I have come up with one. The price was right and I decided to take a chance on it. I have not got it home yet. The guy I bought it from said the engine runs good but the right rear wheel is stuck. He bought it that way and never got around to trying to fix it so he decided to sell it. He had it moved on a roll back truck and I think I will do the same. After searching this forum I see that they have disc brakes. I am thinking it may be as simple as a stuck brake. I am anxious to get it home and start working on it.

Tom, where are you located?
I have a mess of old 300/350U tractors sitting around taking up space.
If you are not too far away, come on down to Houston and help me jack one apart when it cools off.
Will give ya the thing from the bell housing back if you help me get the wheel weights and engine off a 300U...then you will have your IDPTO.

I would start by looking at the brakes like others have said. I had one locked up on me as I was going down the road. Nearly threw me off the tractor as it turned around right in the road. It was a bolt off the bull gear retaing washer that had fell out. I guess that the bull gear picked it up and wedged it between the bull and pinion. It ruined the bull and pinion gear by breaking a couple teeth fom each one. If it isn't the brakes the tod cover will have to come off to have a look see.

As Brownie pointed out, Brakes are very possibly an issue. Bearings in the axles have been known (ours) to get the bearing components jambed at an angle locking things up dramatically. Pretty easy fix even if inner and outer need repair. great tractor, congradulations. JimN

Jack it up, if there is a few inches of rotational play at the tread in the rear wheel, it is more likely brakes. If the wheel has --NO-- play then it is likely the wheel. Bearing parts between the bull and case can break out the case and cause major dammage. Do NOT try to break it loose. JimN

Take a systematic approach. There are many possible reasons for the wheel to be locked. The brake is the most accessible, so it's a logical place to start. If the brake seems okay, you'll have to pull the cover on the transmission.

Brakes are a good place to start. Our 450 sounded like a rear wheel bearing was locking up intermittently. Welllll---we went to the trouble of pulling the rear axle-- only to find the problem was one of the 3 brake retracting springs on the brake discs had rusted a hook off, & dropped down to the bottom of the brake casting. Amazing what a spring can do in the way of making noise & even nearly stopping the tractor while on-the-go. Hope this helps. May save an axle pull.

Thanks for all the help guys, now I know where to start. I can't wait to get it moved here.

Not long ago I got the idea that I would like to try getting some jobs grading roads. I live in a mountain area where a lot of people live on 5 acre parcels and have long access roads. A lot of them need grading.

I worked on a ranch a while back and ran an old Massey Furguson with an angle blade and got to be good with it.

Not knowing much about wheel tractors I asked the question on the ATIS list. What would be a good tractor for this purpose that could be moved with a 3/4 ton pickup and trailer. I got many good sugestions and the overwheming concensus was and IHC 350 would be the tractor to get. I like IHC equipment, my son has a restored Farmall B and we have a 55W bsler. My way is to visualize what I want and sit back and wait and it will come along. In practicaly no time an ad appeared on the local computer network. The guy I bought it from is out of work and needed money. I was able to get it for $550. It has a loader bucket on it too, I did not even visualize that. I wish I had visualized a PTO, it doesnt have one.

Tom, check your serial number suffix and post it. You may be able to bolt a pto unit right to it. Depends on those letter suffix's
