My MD won't start on gas very well at all!! It winds and winds and winds then it starts to kick on about one cylinder, then winds some more and some more like a diesel trying to start on a very cold day. But when it finally starts it runs like a dream!! wouldn't ask for it to run any sweeter. Switches to diesel without a hitch!!! And the motor will switch from diesel back to gas with out a hitch never misses a beat. The tractor has done this since I bought it 2 years ago, I bought another MD motor for parts, so I tryed a different carb, MAG, intake. WHAT AM I MISSING
Thanks in advance

Matt (Still sitting on the seat winding and winding away) haha

I would try new plugs and plug wires. You will be suprised at what this will do for the gas side.

Bought a W450 Diesel because the man couldn't get it to start on gas and that's all I did to it and now it's one the best starting tractor I have.

My MD rarely turns more than twice before it starts. It likes full choke and then you fiddle with the choke as it warms. Have you checked your plugs. If someone has put in regular short plugs, that may be your problem. I believe the correct plug Champion number is D-89. That is a plug with a very long electrode. If you don't have those plugs, it's gonna be hard to start.

I know mine doesn"t want much choke, especially when it is warm out. I pull the choke full out while cranking for just a second or two and then push it halfway back in and it starts right up.

Yeah, same here. Doesn't like choke. Our '50 starts pretty good all the time. I think you should give it a good tune up, and experiment with different choke settings. Get a carb kit. If it is a mag, have someone go over it, if it is dist. get points and conenser. Doug N

I had a H that would run great but start hard. Had the mag rebuilt and started on less than one turn.

Matt, have you tried adjusting all the throttle and starting linkages? It may not be getting the diesel shut off good, causing it to pumped into the cylinders as you are trying to start it and causing the trouble. That starting linkage adjustment is critical.

I wouldn't say so, I know a guy that has an MD and it starts NO problem at all, THE ODD TIME and I mean odd, I will go and start the tractor and it starts like it should 2 or 3 cranks of the engine but that is RARE.

No expert here but my father got rid of an MD in 61 cause it was hard to start.(:~{)

I think that was the nature of those things from the time they were new.

Now we had a 450D in the early 70's and it started easy compared to the MD.

Maybe someone has found the solution for starting those MD's.(:~})

My '47 MD starts good. when I use the starter and the battery is at full charge a couple of cranks and it fires right up. when I roll it to start it two turns of the motor and it is running. I have a good mag, new plugs, and reused plug wires on it. I have more difficulties with it running good on diesel than on gas, but I know what needs to be fixed to cure that problem.
