Was just browsing the Nebraska field test data, saw that a '51 M gas and diesel are rated the same horsepower. Was a little surprised, would've thought the diesel was stronger?

I'm also pretty sure the diesel version had less hp than the gas, super or not. My experience is that the diesel will generally out pull the gas because it has more torque and from the factory the MD was heavier than the M gasser.

the M diesels have the same horse power as the gas M"s and the super MD"s have the same as a gas super M

Horsepower may not be the best measure of pulling power. The diesel M rear end is heavier and the axles are bigger in diameter. Torque may be a better measure. I would much rather plow with a diesel M than a gas M.

F Dean,

The rear end is the same in the M and the MD.

If anything it would be the other way around. Check out the 400 and 450.

That's what I thought too, but it's right there in black & white. Oh ya, they were both Supers.

If they were Supers, they are quite rare, None were built in 51

In most models the diesel verses gas, the gas is higher HP.

But the economy of the diesel per horse power was better than the gas.

When at the fairs that had antique tractor pulls we went to a guy had an MD and it would pull in the 30 to 35hp class, we would pull in the 36 to 40 hp class with the gas M. The book the people that ran the pulls showed the MD at just under 35 hp.
